Welcome to the Department of English. We offer a wide range of courses and a number of different degree programs. Our faculty is composed of highly qualified professors who are committed to their students, to diverse research interests, and to the importance of literature and language as forms of knowledge. The English Department is an active, continually evolving place. We are linked to three journals: Jack, Juice, and Jeunesse. We also house the Centre for Research into Young People's Texts and Cultures (CRYTC), and the Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence Program. We regularly host research talks by faculty members, literary readings by Canadian writers, and a year-end Cabaret of performances and readings by our students.

Our unique first-year program offers courses that introduce students to English studies from a variety of different approaches. Courses may focus on literature, on culture, or on creative writing, and they vary widely in theme. See our Calendar descriptions or our more specific descriptions of current courses for examples.

Our upper-level courses cover literary periods from classic to contemporary, genres from poetry to science fiction; and authors from Shakespeare to Shani Mootoo. Our course titles include Critical Theory, Stylistics, Literature and Film, Creative Writing, Aboriginal Literatures, and Fairy Tales and Culture. See our Calendar descriptions or our more specific descriptions of current upper-level courses for examples.

Considering a major in English? There are many reasons to choose a major in English: to enjoy exploring language, literature, and writing; to learn about human values and actions; to develop skills in critical thinking; or to prepare for professional programs or careers in the arts, cultural work, journalism, advertising, editing, publishing, law, or teaching. See our degree programs for the paths that lead to an English degree.
