"As a sociology student at UWinnipeg, I developed my critical thinking skills to better understand the world around me. My field placement allowed me to gain practical experience in applying the knowledge I attained throughout my degree while making a meaningful contribution to the community. These experiences have set me up as a competitive candidate for graduate studies and future job opportunities."

FACULTY OF ARTS

Sociology

Sociology is a social science that uses theoretical and scientific methods of research to investigate the social world.

Sociology is an examination of the relations between the individual and society. Studying sociology can help you develop a “sociological imagination” which is a quality of mind that enables us to understand our own personal experiences as they are shaped by the society in which we live. Often referred to as the “queen of the social sciences,” sociology uses history, anthropology, philosophy, political science, psychology, economics, and statistics to understand the “social causes and consequences of human behaviour” and how and why certain ideas become popular and dominant during different social, economic, and historical time periods.

This program leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree (3-year, 4-year, or Honours) with a Major in Sociology.  Students taking a degree in another Major may choose to add a Minor in Sociology as a secondary area of interest.  Also available through the Sociology Department is a Research Methods Certificate

Required High School Courses

You must meet The University of Winnipeg’s general admission requirements. No specific courses required.
