Language courses

The University of Winnipeg’s language courses provide up-to-date, effective instruction for beginners as well as intermediate to advanced students. These courses will enrich your education, and many can be used to fulfill the University’s distribution and humanities requirements (for details see under “Degree and Major Requirements” in the Academic Calendar).

Students from any degree program may choose to study a language as a part of their university studies. The courses may be especially relevant if you have an interest in language learning for the purposes of cultural exposure, international travel and/or work, or more specialized study in a particular field such as History, Religion, or Philosophy. In all of the courses, you will gain knowledge and competence in oral and written skills while learning to appreciate the richness and diversity of culture.

The University of Winnipeg offers:

• The classical languages Greek and Latin through the Classics Department;
• Chinese, Japanese, and Korean through the East Asian Languages and Cultures Program;
• Cree and Ojibwe through the Indigenous Languages thematic major;
• French, German, Italian, and Spanish through the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures;
• Mennonite Low German through the Mennonite Studies Program;
• Arabic and Biblical Hebrew through the Department of Religion and Culture.

You must meet The University of Winnipeg’s general admission requirements. Consult the relevant department for information on placement and for permission to enroll in the course for which you qualify.
