“I had always dreamed of studying abroad in France, and the French Studies program allowed me to realize this dream. As a 20-year-old in a foreign country, I never felt like I had to go it alone. The impacts of studying French have been far-reaching and will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
– Rebecca Hume, BA Honours (French Studies) UWinnipeg; MA, Ryerson University, Toronto
French Studies
French Studies provides a diverse curriculum encompassing study in language, linguistics, and literature.
The French Studies program is an integral part of the Modern Languages & Literatures Department. It encompasses study in language, linguistics, literature, and culture as well as overlapping fields of knowledge such as philosophy, sociology, history, aesthetics, and Indigenous studies.
We offer language courses in areas such as writing, translation and stylistics, linguistics courses in areas such as phonetics, morphology, syntax and lexicology, and literature courses examining the major movements, periods and genres in the literatures of France, Canada and the Francophone world. All courses encourage students to develop clarity and diversity of thought, intellectual rigour, and method.
This program leads to a Bachelor of Arts degree (3-year, 4-year, or Honours) with a Major in French Studies. Students taking an undergraduate degree in another Major may choose to add a Minor in French Studies as a secondary area of interest. The Department also participates in the Interdepartmental Minor in Comparative Literature.
Required High School Courses
You must meet The University of Winnipeg’s general admission requirements. No specific courses are required. UWinnipeg offers a wide range of French courses to fit all levels of language proficiency.
NOTE: Students registering for their first French Studies course must take the Online Placement Test. The test results will assist in determining the appropriate first French course to be taken. Further details are available on the French Studies website: uwinnipeg.ca/french-studies/french-placement-test.html
