Data Brokers, Information Access, & Privacy
This presentation examines what data analytics companies or data brokers do. Data analytics companies are a relatively new type of information firm resulting from mass consolidation in information markets. This webinar will describe how these data companies operate and examine the impacts of these mega publishers/data brokers on information access and digital privacy. It will also discuss potential legal safeguards that could preserve data justice.
Speaker: Sarah Lamdan is the Deputy Director at the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom. Before joining ALA, Sarah was an attorney and Professor of Law at CUNY School of Law, and a librarian in various academic and private law libraries. Her work has been featured in Library Quarterly, Georgetown Law Technology Review, and NYU's Review of Law & Social Change. Her book Data Cartels was published by Stanford University Press in 2022.
