Migrant Bodies, That Matter: The Unmarked Graves of the Trans-Mediterranean Buried in Sicily and Lampedusa, Italy

Hosted by Modern Languages and Literatures, join Dr. Paolo Matteucci, Associate Professor at Dalhousie University, Halifax, for the guest conference "Migrant Bodies, That Matter: The Unmarked Graves of the Trans-Mediterranean Buried in Sicily and Lampedusa, Italy". Everyone is welcome!

This conference explores burial in contemporary Italy, in the specific context of funerary art, and with a focus on the victims of trans-Mediterranean migrations. It develops a scrutiny of the concepts of namelessness, anomy and anonymity through the consideration of the unmarked graves hosting, in the cemeteries of Italian islands of Sicily and Lampedusa, the human remains of hundreds of unidentified migrants perished, in Italian waters, while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea.

This is a hybrid event. Zoom registration available.
