Tim IrelandRichard Anthony Aquino, BBA
Valedictorian

Of Filipino descent, Richard-Anthony Aquino is the first child in his family to be born in Canada.  He says that growing up in Winnipeg’s inner-city, witnessing youth at risk and economic disparity, instilled in him the importance of an education, a strong work ethic, and an openess to diversity.

Aquino obtained a rewarding job as a lead designer with the Government of Canada, but after a number of years, felt he was hitting his career ceiling and needed a degree to advance further. In 2014, Aquino took a leave of absence to continue his studies on a full-time basis in the Faculty of Business and Economics where he was recognized for his persistence and hard work.

Throughout his time at UWinnipeg, he has excelled, earning numerous prestigious scholarships and awards, including the Buhler Business Administration Major Scholarshipand the Gold Medal for Highest Achievement in a Major.

Aquino says the best part about his years at UWinnipeg was being surrounded by collaborative, intelligent students, supportive professors, and a sense of belonging. “The people are amazing and I had so many resources and supports available to me as a student.”

Currently, he is interested in pursuing opportunities in financial technology, commodities, or business intelligence.

Aquino’s message to his fellow graduates is simple: “With dedication and hard work, and by surrounding yourself with caring people, there is no obstacle you cannot overcome. Always have a strong belief in yourself.”
