Spring Convocation 2005

Graduation is a time for celebrating outstanding achievements. On Sunday, June 5, 2005, The University of Winnipeg welcomed family, friends, and the public to honour the graduating class of the seventy-ninth convocation. A record 1,082 students graduated, joining more than 30,000 University of Winnipeg alumni around the world.

At Spring Convocation, Dr. John Polanyi, one of Canada’s preeminent scientists and Nobel Laureates (Chemistry 1986) was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science. James MacDonald, (Collegiate Class of 1964) longtime Collegiate and University of Winnipeg supporter, received an Honorary Doctor of Laws. Shirley Render, (Class of 1964) aviation historian, pilot, author, politician, and international public speaker was this year’s recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award.

Many others were also honoured at The University of Winnipeg Spring Convocation:

  • Donald Kerr, retired Physics Professor, was admitted as a Fellow of United College.
  • John Lehr, Geography Professor, was awarded The Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching.
  • Randy Kobes, Chair of the Physics Department and Physics Professor, received the Marsha Hanen Award for Excellence in Creating Community Awareness.
  • Erika Bock (Class of 2005) gave the Valedictory Address to the graduands at the morning ceremony.
  • John Hofley (Class of 1960), retired Sociology Professor, was admitted as a Fellow of United College.
  • Michael McIntyre, Psychology Professor, was awarded The Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching.
  • Keith Louise Fulton, Associate Professor of English, was awarded the Robin H. Farquhar Award for Excellence in Contributing to Self-Governance.
  • Edna Whitcomb and Ida Margolis received Honorary Bachelor of Arts degrees in recognition of their participation in The University of Winnipeg’s Division of Continuing Education 55 Plus Program.
  • Margaret Carlyle (Class of 2005) presented the Valedictory Address to the graduands at the afternoon ceremony.
