Abstract:
Children face a world made by adults on a daily basis, but carve out experiences and spaces that are their own. Through acts of resistance and (subversive) play, children can challenge spatial norms and create heterotopias. This special session invites papers addressing children's geographies of resistance in a broad sense. We are seeking papers that query issues of resistance in children's geographies theoretically, methodologically, or empirically, in contemporary or historical contexts. Interdisciplinary papers are particularly welcomed.

Some potential avenues for exploration:

  • Do children's geographies of resistance look different than those of adults?
  • Are there particular spaces and places that create or subdue resistance in children's lives?
  • What are some methodological tools to conduct research on resistance with/for children?

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

  • Children's mobilities and immobilities
  • Children's 'transgression' of space
  • Youth in/out of place
  • Resisting resistance: acquiescence as a political tool
  • Resistance through the lens of difference
  • Children's climate activism
  • Children's resistance through new media
  • Children's cultures as sites of resistance
  • Children's subversive play
