Arts retirees for 2021: Dr. Catherine Taylor

Fri. Oct. 15, 2021

This year saw the retirement of four of our professors, all of whom are outstanding both in their respective fields and as teachers and mentors. Knowing they'll be greatly missed this fall, we asked some of their colleagues, friends, and former students to share their thoughts.

Today, we highlight one of these remarkable people, Dr. Catherine Taylor (RHET/EDUC).

Dr. Catherine Taylor

Dr. Jaqueline McLeod Rogers is Professor and Chair of the Department of Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications. She says, "I want to note how lucky our University was when [Dr. Catherine Taylor] chose to build her career here and how lucky I've been in having her enduring friendship."

Dr. Catherine Taylor retired as Professor of Education and Professor of Rhetoric and Communications as of January 1, 2021. Here colleagues offer their well wishes to her on her retirement. They note her many administrative roles, her groundbreaking research accomplishments, and her importance as a mentor. While colleagues all admire Dr. Taylor's intellectual depth and scholarly accomplishments, as Dr. Jaqueline McLeod Rogers observes, "they to a person also enthuse about her warmth and character."

Dr. Glenn Moulaison, Dean of Arts: "Dr. Taylor committed her career and life to teaching, scholarship, and real societal change. I cherish in particular the time we shared as Deans in the Faculty of Arts."

Christopher Campbell, PhD candidate at the University of Manitoba: "Sometimes you happen upon a person in your life who makes an indelible impression, someone with whom you have the honour of working, who demonstrates remarkable respect, encourages your growth, supports you expansively, and manages to shine a light ahead so you know where you’re headed next. For me, Catherine has done all of these things and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with her for the last 10 years supporting her groundbreaking research to support 2SLGBTQ+-expansive education. She is my mentor, my favourite collaborator, and a dear friend — and I know I’m not alone, as I’ve seen how beloved and respected she is at the UW and in her professional circles. Wishing her the happiest and most well deserved retirement!"

Dr. Angela Failler, Professor, Department of Women's and Gender Studies: "Catherine has been an incredible mentor from the very start of my career at UWinnipeg. There are few academics who model integrity, curiosity and humility all at once, like she does. Catherine maintains her commitments with the upmost genuineness and a sense of humour -- a fine balance that I know her colleagues and students have appreciated. I already miss Catherine's regular presence on campus, but she will continue to inspire the best work that many of us will do."

Dr. Jaqueline McLeod Rogers, Professor and Chair, Department of Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications: "I expect others will cite Catherine's research, administrative and pedagogical contributions to UWinnipeg and the post secondary community. I want to note how lucky our University was when she chose to build her career here and how lucky I've been in having her enduring friendship."
