"THIS IS NOT A BOOK LAUNCH"

Wed. Jan. 20 12:30 PM - Wed. Jan. 20 02:00 PM

Please join us for "Ceci n’est pas un book launch/This is not a book launch," a talk (in English) by Dr. Bruno Cornellier, Department of English, on his new book  La “chose indienne”: Cinéma et politiques de la représentation autochtone au Québec et au Canada

When: Wednesday, January 20; 12:30 p.m.
Where: Room 2M77 (Manitoba Hall)

In 1944, John Grierson associated the documentary mandate of the National Film Board of Canada to a desire to capture “that ‘Canadian thing’,” that undefined and undefinable character of the “new nation.” Bruno Cornellier’s La “chose indienne” teases this assumption and invites readers to denaturalize the sovereign project, as well as the colonial modes of being and dwelling, that this elusive ‘thingness’ authorizes. By interrogating the instrumental role played by cinema in the constant refashioning of competing sovereign projects, the book theorizes new ways of apprehending settler and indigenous relationships with representation, identity, decolonization, and, ultimately, sovereignty.
