UWinnipeg Anishinaabemowin Immersion Cohort Expression of Interest
UWinnipeg Anishinaabemowin Immersion Cohort Expression of Interest
Are you interested in becoming a speaker of Anishinaabemowin? Consider joining the 2026-2029 Anishinaabemowin immersion cohort. Students in the cohort will learn Anishinaabemowin together, approximately fifteen hours per week (6 credit hours per term), all year round. Course work includes beginner, intermediate, and advanced Anishinaabemowin courses, as well as specialized courses in Anishinaabemowin immersion, language camps, and participation in a mentor-apprentice program.
Students will also engage with the Anishinaabe-speaking community over shared meals and special events with teachers and language speakers. Courses taken through the cohort are University accredited and may be used toward Certificate and/or Bachelor of Arts credentials (additional courses required for the full Bachelor of Arts degree). Cohort students must be, or become, admitted students at the University of Winnipeg.
If this cohort opportunity sounds like it is for you, please answer a brief survey to help the coordinators get to know you.

What level of language do you aspire to achieve in your lifetime and what do you plan to do with the language and skills that you learn? Please write a paragraph or two.
With the Anishinaabemowin immersion cohort, we want to create a safe supportive place for learners and all our relatives to learn and speak. By being respectful and supportive, we help other learners and speakers grow and contribute to the language community. Share a paragraph with us about how you see yourself fitting into that.
When you encounter a block or frustration (such as when you can’t remember the right word, word part, or the question you asked is not understood), what are some things you do to overcome that? Write a paragraph and reflect about practices you do personally and what you have/or might do in language learning.
Make a 1.5 minute video or audio recording in Anishinaabemowin and post the link here. Introduce yourself and talk briefly about anything with the remaining time (e.g. talk about yourself, your day, the weather, or an object you have with you).
If you don't have a link to include, share by email to aa.muldrew@uwinnipeg.ca. If you have difficulty uploading the recording, email aa.muldrew@uwinnipeg.ca to set up a time to zoom record or to set up a phone call. An alternative contact for phone calls or texting is: 204.869.7332
