Caravan Archaeologies Workshop/Taller de Caravanas Arqueológicas
Notes on the Powinda caravan trade of eastern Afghanistan
Abstract
This is a 30-minute power point presentation about the archaeological and architectural heritage of the Afghan nomadic caravan traders in late-medieval and early modern South Asia. It will be argued that this heritage (including roads and caravanserais) was fundamental to the development of the Mughal empire, and hence even the British empire of the nineteenth century.
Paper copies of the presentation will be made available at the conference and a digital version upon request by early May.
