Women's & Gender Studies


IMPORTANT: Students must ensure that they have declared their Major in Women's & Gender Studies in order to be eligible and considered for the following awards.

The following awards are adjudicated by the Department of Women’s & Gender Studies:

University of Winnipeg Women's Auxiliary Scholarship in Women's Studies - $925 (two available)
Provided by the Women's Auxiliary, this scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student who is majoring in Women's and Gender Studies. 

Women’s and Gender Studies Scholarship - $500
This scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who has completed at least 30 credit hours and is majoring in Women’s and Gender Studies. Preference will be given to a student who has made a contribution to the community.

Disability Studies Scholarship - $500
This scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who has completed at least 30 credit hours and is majoring in Disability  Studies. Preference will be given to a student who has made a contribution to the community.

 General Bursary (PDF)

Need money? A bursary is a grant made to a student where the main selection criteria is financial need. Students must also have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.00 (C). These bursaries are meant to assist students in the Winter and Spring terms.

           Spring Term Deadline: Friday, May 31, 2019 - application available in April 2019.

Ruth Warne/Berenice Sisler Bursary - $1,500
This bursary has been established by Berenice Sisler in honour of her mother, Ruth Warne. It will be awarded annually to a student who has completed First Year (30 credit hours) and is majoring in Women’s and Gender Studies. Selection will be based on financial need with preference given to students whose assessed financial need for government-sponsored student aid programs exceeds the maximum financial aid package available from the student aid program.

Susan A. Thompson Bursary in Women’s and Gender Studies - $500
Susan A. Thompson, the first C.E.O. of The University of Winnipeg Foundation, the first woman mayor of Winnipeg, the first woman Rotarian in Manitoba, and the first woman to be named Consul General of the Canadian Consulate in Minneapolis established this bursary in 2003. It will be awarded to a deserving student who has completed at least 30 credit hours and is majoring in Women’s and Gender Studies.

Business & Professional Women (BPW) Winnipeg Central Bursary - $500
This bursary will be awarded to a student who demonstrates financial need and has either prioritized family responsibilities ahead of personal educational goals, or who comes from a single parent household and may have difficulty completing educational goals. The recipient must be a Canadian citizen studying Women’s & Gender Studies or related studies, Politics or Economics. Preference will be given to a woman demonstrating a strong record of involvement in the community or sports.

Dr. Royden and Dr. Angela Davis Memorial Scholarship - $1,000
Awarded to a WGS student intending to pursue a graduate or professional degree. Preference may be given to someone pursing Cultural Studies. This award has been established in honour and memory of Dr. Royden Davis and his wife Dr. Angela Davis, who was a graduate and instructor at The University of Winnipeg, and had a long-standing and passionate interest in history, art and further education. Royden and Angela shared a belief in the pursuit of knowledge and the value of a university education. 

Edwin and Anne Eagle Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship commemorates Edwin & Anne Eagle's dedication to the University, and will be awarded to an outstanding student in the Department of Classics. Professor Emeritus Edwin Eagle taught Classics at United College, which became The University of Winnipeg, for over 40 years. He served as the Departments only member from 1940-60, as Dean of Arts and Science from 1960-68, and as Department Head in Classics until his retirement in 1976. Dr. Edwin Eagle served faithfully as the last Dean of Arts and Science of United College, and as the first Dean of Arts and Science at The University of Winnipeg, and his efforts were instrumental in establishing The University of Winnipeg. Dr. Eagle also demonstrated his strong support for Women’s and Gender Studies programs. In the event that a suitable candidate is not found in the Department of Classics, the award may be given to a student enrolled in Women's and Gender Studies.

 

External Awards

The Margret J. Benedictsson Scholarship (IODE)

This scholarship is for a woman beyond first year attending a Manitoba post secondary institution (college or university) who has been active in social justice issues as they pertain to women.

All applications must be mailed and postdated by September 16, 2019. Emailed applications and hand-delivered applications will not be accepted.
