Assignment: My Home My Heritage: Where I Am From
My Home My Heritage: Where I Am From was an assignment designed to help students explore and share their cultural background, identity, and family heritage through a personal artefact. Students chose a meaningful object from home, photographed it (with or without themselves), and wrote a short piece explaining what the object is, the culture it represents, why it matters to them, and a memory or story connected to it. They then presented their artefact and writing in class and reflected on what they learned about themselves, their heritage, and their classmates.
Students at six universities around the world completed the assignment in writing or culture studies classes. Those who chose to be part of the website gallery completed a consent form. Contributing universities included:
