Lab Safety
The Safety Office Lab Safety program provides supports for labs as well as hazard-specific including the Biosafety Program, the Radiation Safety Program, Animal Care, and Laser Safety Program,all aimed at promoting safe and compliant research practices.

Lab permits: A lab is the area that contains hazardous materials subject to Health and Safety permitting for the purpose of teaching or research. This includes X-ray rooms, workshops, storage areas, and research laboratories. The permits are submitted through Campus Optics: Permit Types - Permits • CampusOptics

Lab signage: All permitted lab spaces must have a lab placard posted on the door. This placard identifies personal protective equipment (PPE) that are required for entry into the lab, hazards that are present in the lab space, and the contact information for the supervisors in charge of the lab space. A lab placard is generated from Campus Optics.
Lab safety training: Use the New Hire Orientation for Lab Personnel to ensure workers in the lab are fully trained before starting their work. A WHMIS training course is mandatory for the workers and should be completed through Nexus. The Basic Lab Safety training course for instructors is mandatory for all the instructors and should be completed through Nexus.
