Field Safety

Field Safety can refer to any work or research that is conducted in outdoor environments or outside UW facilities.

Outdoor work locations can present a variety of risks, including severe or rapidly changing weather, uneven ground conditions, hazards associated with rivers, lakes, or other bodies of water, potentially dangerous plants and wildlife, and the operation of heavy machinery or equipment. Field-based research may involve many of these same hazards, while also introducing additional considerations such as travel to unfamiliar locations or remote areas with limited access to assistance.

When planning research activities, it is important to assess risks in any new environment, regardless of whether the work takes place outdoors or indoors. Entering an unfamiliar facility, workplace, or research site may expose workers to hazards that are not immediately apparent. Therefore, having a field research safety plan is critical before conducting work and research in new environments.

Submitting a field research safety plan is mandatory for faculty members at the University of Winnipeg. This proactive approach helps identify potential risks, outlines emergency procedures, and ensures that both the researcher and participants are protected. It demonstrates responsibility and preparedness, supports ethical research practices, and aligns with university policies designed to promote safety during off-campus or field-based work.
