RISE is proud to support education rights for LGBTQ people in Canada!
Welcome!
RISE is a site for research on inclusive education in the area of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and questioning (2SLGBTQ+) youth. RISE aims to produce critical research on 2SLGBTQ-inclusive education and 2SLGBTQ issues, including studies on LGBTQ youths’ health and wellbeing, the effectiveness of Gay-Straight Alliances/Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) and other school-system interventions in reducing stigma and improving resilience of LGBTQ students, and individuals’ experiences of homophobia in Canadian schools. Driven by a strong emphasis on social justice and human rights, RISE aims to make such research accessible as we work together to identify best practices for researchers, educators, and citizens alike to improve the lives of 2SLGBTQ students, staff, and families and end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.
Dr. Catherine Taylor is the lead researcher of the RISE research program, Associate Dean of Arts, and Professor in the Faculty of Education and the Department of Rhetoric, Writing, & Communications at The University of Winnipeg. Her work on LGBTQ-inclusive education and LGBTQ youths’ wellbeing has been published widely in scholarly journals and books. She is the Principal Investigator of several research projects on LGBTQ-inclusive education, including:
- The First National Climate Survey on Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (conducted in partnership with and funded by Egale Canada Human Rights Trust, with additional support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada), which produced Every Class in Every School: Final Report on the First National Climate Survey on Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia in Canadian Schools;
- The Every Teacher Project/le projet Chaque prof (Canadian Teachers’ Perceptions and Experiences of Inclusive Education in the Area of Gender and Sexuality Diversity), a large-scale SSHRC-funded research program involving survey, focus group and interview data collection of teachers and in-service educators (conducted in partnership with Manitoba Teachers’ Society), which produced The Every Teacher Project on LGBTQ-Inclusive Education in Canada’s K-12 Schools: Final Report [Rapport final du projet Chaque prof sur l’éducation inclusive des personnes LGBTQ dans les écoles de la maternelle à la douzième année au Canada] and the Every Teacher Project Recommendations Toolkit;
- The National Inventory [Inventaire national] of School District Interventions in Support of LGBTQ Student Wellbeing (conducted in partnership with Manitoba Association of School Superintendents), part of the larger CIHR-funded research program Reducing Stigma, Promoting Resilience: Population Health Interventions for LGBTQ Youth led by Dr. Elizabeth Saewyc (Nursing, University of British Columbia), which produced The National Inventory of School District Interventions in Support of LGBTQ Student Wellbeing: Final Report [Inventaire national des interventions des commissions scolaires pour soutenir le bien-être des élèves LGBTQ : Rapport final];
- RISE Project on 2SLGBTQ+-expansive Teacher Education in Canadian Universities; and
- The Second National Climate Survey on Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia (conducted in partnership with Egale Canada Human Rights Trust), which produced Still in Every Class in Every School: Final Report on the Second National Climate Survey on Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia in Canadian Schools.
