As you may know, the Government of Canada is implementing a made-in-Canada Athena SWAN program as part of its commitment to promoting equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in the post-secondary research community.

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is leading Athena SWAN in collaboration with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Progress to date

Initial consultations on the Canadian Athena SWAN program were held across the country in the summer and fall of 2018. Feedback from these consultations emphasized the importance of working with organizations that support underrepresented groups to design the program and ensure that the Charter is inclusive.

Consulting on the Charter

NSERC is launching a second round of consultations to inform the first draft of the Canadian Athena SWAN Charter. The diverse perspectives, knowledge, and experiences of stakeholders gathered through these consultations will help strengthen the Charter and program design, requirements, and processes.

Providing feedback in person

In addition to holding consultation sessions, NSERC representatives will be holding in-person meetings to gather input on the draft Charter and program design. We have developed guiding questions to help you to develop your input.

If you have any questions or would like to provide input in advance of our meeting, you can contact us by email at For more information on the made-in-Canada Athena SWAN initiative, please visit our website.
