The 6–4–3–2 Review Process

Text Description of Infographic

6 - External Review Deadline — Voluntary

Researchers wishing to send their application for external review to grant writing
experts must submit their full application to the Research Office 6 weeks prior to
the external funder’s final deadline. If a researcher has an expert in mind, they can
also ask the Research Office to connect with them; otherwise the Research Office
will coordinate between an expert and the researcher. The Research Office will
fund up to $1,000 for this external review contract per application.

**This option is only available for applications requesting more than $100,000**

4 - Internal Peer Review Deadline — Voluntary

Researchers wishing to get feedback from their peers at UW and the relevant internal
tri-agency review group must submit their full application to the Research Office
4 weeks prior to the external funder’s final deadline. The Research Office will work with
the tri-agency representative on campus to match applications with peer reviewers.

3 - EDI Inclusion Content Review — Voluntary

If a researcher would like the Program Officer for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Anti-Racism, and Decolonization (EDI/AR/D) and Research to review their external grant application for effective integration of equity, diversity, and inclusion principles, they need to submit their full application to the Research Office 3 weeks prior to the external deadline. The Program Officer will provide feedback on how EDI has been integrated into the research design and research practice elements of the application.

2 - Research Office Compliance Review Deadline — Mandatory

The full application is due to the Research Office 2 weeks prior to the external
funder’s deadline. Members of the Research Office will review the application
to ensure all aspects are compliant with the funder’s requirements. Some minor changes may be required at this change upon request from the Research Office.
A substantive review may not be possible at this stage, dependent upon the
number of applications under review for a given competition, so researchers
wishing for a more substantive review  are encouraged to send in their draft
application as early as possible.
