Pre-Professional Studies Electives

Some of the Pre-Professional programs that we offer require students to take elective courses.  Please review the following for additional information.  An Academic Advisor can assist in showing you how to use the resources listed below.

If you have any questions or concerns if a course will be acceptable to use as an elective, you must reach out to the school/program in question.  Determining if a course can be used to fulfill an admission requirement is up to the school in question and not The University of Winnipeg.

Canadian Mennonite University

General Electives

All course offered by the University of Winnipeg will be accepted as an elective for Admission purposes only.  Please confirm with CMU whether these courses can also be used to complete their BSW degree requirements.

RRC Polytech

Science Electives

If The University of Winnipeg classifies a course as a Science, RRC Polytech will also consider it a Science.  RRC Polytech will allow students to use PSYC-1000 as a Science course.

University of Manitoba

General Electives

Course must be eligible to transfer to the University of Manitoba.  You can review your elective courses using the following website https://apply.umanitoba.ca/portal/tc_resource

Humanities Electives

Elective satisfaction would be based on a combination of things – subject code on the transcript of record, established equivalencies in our system, and our own Faculty of Arts classifications.

Course subjects taught by the Faculty of Arts that can be used towards the Humanities requirement: ARTS 2020, Arabic, Asian Studies, Canadian Studies, Catholic Studies, Classical Studies, English (excluding ENGL 0930, ENGL 0940, ENGL 2000, ENGL 2001), Film Studies, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, History, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Judaic Civilization, Latin, Indigenous Languages, Indigenous Studies, Philosophy, Polish, Portuguese, Religion, Russian, Spanish, Theatre, Ukrainian, Ukrainian Canadian Heritage Studies, and Yiddish.

In addition the following courses may be used: American Sign Language ASLL 1000; Global Political Economy GPE 3700; Women's and Gender Studies WOMN 1500, WOMN 2530, WOMN 2600, WOMN 2620, WOMN 2630, WOMN 3110, WOMN 3120 and WOMN 3620.

Course subjects offered by other units which can be used towards the Humanities requirement: Art History (i.e. all courses listed with course prefix FAAH). (For details on Art History courses).

Science Electives

Elective satisfaction would be based on a combination of things – subject code on the transcript of record, established equivalencies in our system, and our own Faculty of Science classifications.

Course subjects taught by the Faculty of Science that can be used towards the  Science requirement: Astronomy, Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics, Science Interdisciplinary, Statistics

Social Science Electives

Elective satisfaction would be based on a combination of things – subject code on the transcript of record, established equivalencies in our system, and our own Faculty of Arts classifications.

Course subjects taught by the Faculty of Arts that can be used towards the Social Science requirement: Anthropology, Economics, Global Politi¬cal Economy courses GPE 1700, GPE 2700, GPE 4700, Labour Studies, Linguistics, Political Studies, Psychology, and Sociology.

In addition, the following courses may be used: Women’s and Gender Studies: WOMN 1600, WOMN 2500, WOMN 2560, WOMN 2610, WOMN 2640, WOMN 2650, WOMN 3100, WOMN 3130, WOMN 3550, WOMN 3560 and Others ARTS 1160.

When checking if an elective course is acceptable for the University of Manitoba you need to:

  • Use the transfer credit website
  • Filter for the University of Winnipeg
  • Ensure the course has an equivalent at the University of Manitoba
  • If there is an equivalent, ensure the course was taken during a time frame when it was considered equivalent
  • It meets the criteria listed above if it has to be a Humanities, Science or Social Science

If it does not meet the above criteria, you would need to contact the University of Manitoba for additional information.

University of Saskatchewan

General Electives

Any courses offered at a University level will be accepted.  Courses from institutions with non-degree programs, such as diplomas or certificates (or Polytech level courses) which aren’t university transferable will not be accepted.
