Pre-Nursing

Year 1: Pre-Nursing at The University of Winnipeg
Each nursing program has its own entrance requirements. To meet the entrance requirements for Nursing at the University of Manitoba, you will complete 30 credit hours or one year of study, including the “Pre-Professional Requirements” listed below. Of those 30 credit hours, 27 credit hours are currently offered by UWinnipeg. The remaining 3 credit hours can be obtained at the UManitoba via Letter of Permission.

Years 2-4: Professional Studies: Nursing
During your pre-professional studies at UWinnipeg, you will apply for admission to nursing at another university or college. Enrolment in nursing programs is limited, and only qualified applicants are chosen.  Three more years of study are required at the UManitoba to complete a degree program in nursing. College programs may be shorter.

Most students who study Pre-Nursing at UWinnipeg will apply for admission to the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences College of Nursing at the UManitoba, but you may choose to apply elsewhere. The following are UWinnipeg courses that satisfy 27 of the 30 credit hours required for the UManitoba’s entrance requirements for Nursing:

• BIOL-1112 (6) Human Anatomy and Physiology
• Science Electives 9 credit hours (courses must transfer over as a Science. An Academic Advisor can go over the resources available to review your course selection.   See Pre-professional - Electives webpage.)
• Social Science/Humanities Electives 12 credit hours (courses must transfer over as a Humanities or Social Science. An Academic Advisor can go over the resources available to review your course selection.  See Pre-professional - Electives webpage.)

All requirements listed above must be completed with a minimum C grade and within ten years of application. 

The remaining 3 credit hours of courses can be met by taking MBIO1220 or MBIO3010 at the UManitoba via Letter of Permission (LOP).  When taking a course via LOP, students must ensure they meet pre-requisite requirements at the visiting school.  UWinnipeg may waive the LOP minimum credit hour requirement in this situation.
