Sears Named Canada West Female Athlete Of The Week

Women's Volleyball Fifth Year Team Captain Lauren Sears Was Selected Today As The Canada West Female Athlete Of The Week..

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen in conjunction with the Canada West Universities Athletic Association are pleased to announce that Women’s Volleyball player Lauren Sears has been selected as the Canada West Female Athlete of the Week for the period ending January 15, 2012.

The fifth year middle blocker was at her best this past weekend in leading the now #2 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen to a two match sweep over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

In Friday’s straight sets victory, Sears pounded home a match high 16 kills in 22 total attempts for an impressive hitting percentage of .682 and only committed one attacking error. She also finished the match with six total blocks (three solo), three service aces and two defensive digs.

The 5’11 Wesmen team captain was once again a force in Saturday’s 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20) victory. Sears once again led all players with a match high 20 kills and a hitting percentage of .567 with only three attacking errors. She also was strong at net finishing with seven total blocks (three solo) and continued her strong play at the service line serving up three service aces.

Sears has played a big part in leading the Wesmen to a record of 12-2 and currently in second spot in the Canada West Women’s Volleyball Conference standings.

She currently leads the Canada West Women’s Volleyball conference in service aces (36) and total points (240.5). She is also ranked in the top ten in total kills, hitting percentage and blocks.

The Wesmen (12-2) will be on the road this weekend for a pair of matches in Langley, British Columbia against the #7 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans.
