CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL

In positions at this level, incumbents provide routine technical assistance in support of teaching and research which involve specific procedures or techniques.  Close supervision is received, progressing to general supervision after a training period.  Supervision and instruction are received from more senior technicians, administrators or academics.  Incumbents may be required to assist in the introductory training of other employees at the same or lower levels.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH ARE INTENDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION WITHIN THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
  1. Prepares standardized samples, solutions, media or stains for use in a laboratory following detailed instructions
  2. Assists in gathering test samples, taking recordings, excavations, generally observing test progress and recording results
  3. Assists in preparing for or performing standard tests or experiments under specific instructions
  4. Sets up and/or operates audio, visual or standardized laboratory equipment
  5. Feeds, waters and provides general care to animals, fish, insects and plants following basic instructions
  6. Compiles information obtained through telephone or in-person interviews, administering surveys or questionnaires and/or reviewing printed materials
  7. Performs routine data input and analysis using a computer terminal and prescribed programs and methods
  8. Compiles routine bibliographic information which may involve using library services
  9. Performs routine file maintenance activities
  10. Sets up and cleans laboratories, classrooms, lecture halls, etc.,  performs general maintenance, makes minor repairs to standard equipment and assembles basic apparatus under supervision
  11. Identifies when chemicals, equipment, and general supplies are depleted from an inventory
  12. Performs other related duties as required or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications required are:

Level of Formal Education

  • High school completion with related options
Experience
  • One year of directly related experience 
  • or
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to learn and understand experimental procedures 
  • Ability to use good manual dexterity
  • Ability to relate effectively with staff, students and the public
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to maintain cleanliness and safety standards
Physical Requirements
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned
