CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL

In positions at this level, incumbents plan and follow through on projects including: consulting and providing recommendations on artistic and/or technical options in creating printed copy, preparing original or modifying existing designs involving aspects of graphic art, typesetting, copymarking and layout to produce final copy for photographing and the execution of jobs from the design stage through to the production of the final product.  Activities are handled independently with consultation for additional input where required.  Supervision of others is not a requirement, however, an incumbent may be expected to assist in the introductory training or assignment of tasks to other employees at the same or lower levels.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH ARE INTENDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION WITHIN THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
  1. Meets with clients to discuss needs, recommend approaches and materials and designs solutions that are feasible
  2. Plans and follows through on projects from design to final production
  3. Applies artistic and technical procedures used in design, composing, layout, graphic arts, photography, and all other areas of the printing process
  4. Explains problems to clients and resolves same with best solution(s) possible
  5. Operates a camera to make photo mechanical transfers which will be used as "camera ready" copy
  6. Performs routine maintenance on equipment
  7. Prepares cost and time estimates for work completion and coordinates and maintains records on progress of projects
  8. Performs other related duties as required or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory)  performance are:

Level of Formal Education

  • High school completion with formal training at a technical or vocational school
Experience
  • Five years of directly related experience
  • Working knowledge of the various facets of the printing industry including design, graphic arts, typesetting, paste-up and camera production
  • or
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills and Abilities
  • Good manual dexterity
  • Basic computer skills required for desktop publishing
  • Ability to pay excellent attention to detail and to work with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to organize work, meet deadlines and work independently
  • Ability to cooperate with staff in all areas of Printing Services to ensure timely completion of projects
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, in a consultative manner
  • Must demonstrate creative artistic ability to transform concepts into visual images
  • Must be capable of learning new software/hardware applications
Physical Requirements
  • Manual dexterity to operate equipment
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned
