CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL

In positions at this level, incumbents operate presses, duplicators and/or a plate-making camera to process plates for black and white or two-colour reproductions. Under general supervision, an incumbent is required to meet frequent deadlines and to be responsible for the quality of finished materials in Printing Services. The supervision of others is not a requirement, however, incumbents may be required to assist in the introductory training of other employees at the same or lower levels.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH ARE INTENDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION WITHIN THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
  1. Operates a camera to produce negatives, positives and plates; plate maker; two-sided and two-colour offset presses and other related printing and job finishing equipment
  2. Mixes developers and calculates exposures for reductions or enlargements according to printing requirements
  3. Makes and strips negatives from material supplied; mounts negatives on masking sheets and prepares them for plate making
  4. Prepares various sizes of plates for presses
  5. Separates and prepares negatives and plates for colour overlays used in two colour printing
  6. Operates high speed duplicators, maintains production records and performs basic maintenance on equipment as required
  7. Cleans and performs routine maintenance on printing and camera equipment making adjustments and minor repairs in the event of a misalignment, malfunction or stoppage
  8. Maintains records of jobs completed, departmental files and artwork produced
  9. Monitors supply levels and makes note of depletions - ie: film, paper, chemicals, etc.
  10. Performs assistance in the Bindery area, ensures work area is clean/uncluttered, and performs other related duties as required or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory)  performance are:

Level of Formal Education

  • High school completion with formal training at a technical or vocational school
Experience
  • Four years of directly related experience
  • or
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to organize work, meet deadlines and work independently
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students and the public
Physical Requirements
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned
