The 9th Annual 3-Minute Thesis Competition

The University of Winnipeg's 9th Annual 3-Minute Thesis Competition was held on March 3, 2022.

The First Place Winner was Natassia D'Sena (Criminal Justice) for her 3MT presentation "Virtual DriveThrus: Is McDonald's the OnlyFans of the Sex Industry?". Natassia will be moving forward to the Western Regional 3-Minute Thesis Competition, hosted by the University of Winnipeg!

The judges also gave honourable mentions to Aimee Lynn Louis (Indigenous Governance) for "Miyo pimātisiwin opikināwasowin (Self-determination in Child-rearing)" and Shayla Jackson for "Venison, squirrel or beef? Individual variation in coyote diet".

Our People's Choice Winner was Bradley Howell (Bioscience, Technology and Public Policy) with "Fishing for GIANTS: Response Cues for Survival". Kirstin Witwicki (Environmental and Social Change) was the runner-up with "Fighting Fire with Fire: Amplifying the Voices of Indigenous Fire Affected Communities across Western Canada".

The 3MT™ is a research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland which challenges postgraduate degree students to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience within three minutes.

Meet the 9th Annual 3MT Judges
Alain Beaudry

Dr. Alain Beaudry, MA, MD, is a physician and economist with a special interest in Indigenous health and epidemiology. He is the Chair of the Indigenous Admissions Stream at the University of Manitoba College of Medicine, and is a regular instructor in Undergraduate Medicine. He is actively involved in Manitoba’s business sector, and regularly acts as a strategic consultant to several organizations. He is proudly a graduate of the University of Winnipeg, from which he earned both his B.A. (Hons) and M.A. in Economics. He also taught at the Department of Economics for several years, and was privileged to sit on the U of W’s Board of Regents.

When not working on the wards of Health Sciences Centre or in one of his favourite northern communities, he can be most often found enjoying time with his three children, or reading a book, cappuccino alongside, in a sunny cafe window.

Jason Hannan

Jason Hannan is Associate Professor in the Department of Rhetoric, Writing, & Communications. He is the author of Ethics Under Capital: MacIntyre, Communication, and the Culture Wars (2020) and editor of Meatsplaining: The Animal Agriculture Industry and the Rhetoric of Denial (2020), Truth in the Public Sphere (2016) and Philosophical Profiles in the Theory of Communication (2012). His current book project is Trolling Ourselves to Death: Democracy in the Age of Social Media (forthcoming with Oxford University Press).

Stacey Wowchuk

Stacey Wowchuk is the Assistant Auditor General of Manitoba. She started with the Office in June 2019. She has spent the majority of her career working in Performance Audit with the Office of the Auditor General of Canada in Ottawa. She has also held several positions in the federal public service at the now Department of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, as well as the Canada Border Services Agency. In addition to her public sector experience, Stacey worked for several years as a consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Ottawa office in their Advisory Services group.

Those experiences helped shape her perspective on accountability, public service, and the knowledge that there are many paths that can lead to a shared outcome. She knows first-hand that one’s career path can be anything but straightforward. But every experience that leads to something different is a chance to learn something new and holds the possibility of finding something you really love.

Stacey is a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and holds a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Manitoba / University of Winnipeg’s Joint Masters Program, as well as a Graduate Diploma in Program Evaluation from the University of Ottawa.

Event Information

This competition was being held on March 3rd from 2-4:30pm via Zoom.

Competition Rules and Regulations

Presentation Rules:

  • A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted. No slide transitions, animations or 'movement' of any description are allowed. The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.
  • No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.
  • No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
  • Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
  • Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through either movement or speech.
  • The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.
