The Faculty of Graduate Studies Invites Applicants for the following position


Post:   Graduate Student Writing Tutor & Senior Research Assistant (One Position)

Duration of Contract: August 15 – March 31, 2016  
Hours Per Week:   Ten (10)

Application Deadline: July 15, 2016
Rate of pay:  $11.35/hr (Tutor at 5 hours per week) and $19.00/hr (Senior Research Assistant at 5 hours per week) 


The University has embarked on a major drive to extend its academic excellence by promoting graduate training and research innovation and thereby enhancing the University’s intellectual capacity and prominence.  As outlined in the University of Winnipeg strategic priorities, providing an outstanding student experience with increased diversity and access are major areas of focus in terms of enhancing student culture and academic excellence. With this in mind, the Faculty of Graduate Studies has created the following position, as outlined below.  

Project Scope:

Under the overall guidance and supervision of Jennifer Clary-Lemon in the Department of Rhetoric, Writing & Communications, the Graduate Student Writing Tutor and Senior Research Assistant will:
•              be trained in writing pedagogy;

•              meet with and lead undergraduate writing tutors;

•              observe and respond to peer tutoring sessions;

•              develop writing-based workshops for graduate students;

•              interview graduate faculty about writing assignments and  expectations in graduate-level courses;

•              research and develop expertise on graduate-specific genres: MA theses, course papers, conference papers, journal submissions, posters, conference presentations;

•              present as requested and coordinate writing workshops in graduate classes;

•              meet as requested with graduate program orientation sessions;

•              develop resources for UW graduate programs and graduate student writers; and

•              tutor graduate students in writing.

General Requirements:

The ideal candidate for this position will have strong written, verbal, and social skills, and applications are encouraged by current UW Master’s students who have already completed one year of their program. Prior experience related to activities as outlined above will be given primary consideration in determining the successful applicant.

Required abilities and skills:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills,
  • Excellent social and interpersonal skills.
  • Superior organizational and multi-tasking skills with the ability to coordinate multiple events.
  • Candidate must have knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will be a current graduate student in their second year of study at the University of Winnipeg, returning to full-time studies in Fall 2016.
  • Prior experience in tutoring and/or teaching would be an asset.
  • Interest in professional development or employment in advanced research.
