Master of Arts in Criminal Justice

Michael WeinrathDr. Michael Weinrath, Graduate Program Chair

Congratulations to Breanna Belisle, Braden Broschuk, Jantje Van de Weetering, and Aleksandra Manzhura for attaining their Master of Arts in Criminal Justice!

Breanna was a committed student tireless worker who put together a unique study on sentencing, gender, race and victim identity. Braeden Broschuk completed a wonderful thesis on police attitudes towards use of Restorative Justice (RJ), combining survey data with depth interview to provide a nuanced, thorough analysis of why police might use or not use RJ. Jantje Van de Weetering conducted an important student survey on attitudes towards crime and punishment and how that might be influenced by the major a student had chosen. Finally, Aleksandra Manzhura used in-depth interviews and review of relevant legislation to investigate medical assistance in dying policy and recommended a number of ways to improve this practice.

A master's degree demands a great deal from an individual, and it was particularly challenging during COVID. These students demonstrated strong discipline and intellectual prowess to complete their work. While your degree will bring considerable success to you in future, I hope that you will remember to look back fondly at the time you spent in graduate school at the University of Winnipeg, how you met the challenges of your program and the many strong bonds your forged with your colleagues and professors along the way.
