Meagan GreentreeMeagan Greentree – JMP Public Administration

As a joint Master of Public Administration (MPA) student, I’m interested in a wide range of policy domains within national security and defence. Throughout my studies, my research has grown increasingly focused on human-centric security threats to northern indigenous communities, which have been imposed by rapidly evolving environmental, political, social, and economic forces. My current research considers the security implications of long-term infrastructure development projects in the northern territories which are being spearheaded through the National Trade Corridors Fund. This research is important to me because I believe that the federal government’s renewed interest in the Arctic presents new opportunities to address the socioeconomic disparity that exists within many northern communities. In the short term, I hope my research can help to identify program funding gaps and new federal cost-sharing initiatives to ensure that long-term development projects are completed. Over the span of my career, I would like to help develop public policies that enhance northern resident’s capacity for resiliency in the face of climate change.

While I have had the pleasure of learning from many professors within my program, Dr. Andrea Charron has had the most significant influence on my research interests and my career trajectory. In my almost ten years of post-secondary studies, I cannot recall a professor who was so dedicated to their student’s success, or so infectiously passionate about their field. I am thankful I had the opportunity to learn from her. I’m also very grateful to be the chosen recipient for the Donald V. Snider Memorial Fellowship. This generous award reduces my student debt load and gives me the financial freedom to focus on my studies. More importantly, I believe this award will increase my competitiveness in the DND Policy Officer Recruitment programme, as I hope to secure a position in the programme upon graduation.
