12 month Post-Doctoral Fellowship: Decolonising Higher Education in Canada and South Africa

This exciting dual-site research project is a comparative study of student led/directed efforts to decolonise/Indigenise higher education in Canada and South Africa.  Sparked by the University of Winnipeg’s Indigenous Course Requirement, and South Africa’s widespread #FeesMustFall protests, this project seeks to comparatively investigate ways students in higher education are narrating, resisting and challenging colonial legacies in their unique contexts.  This project explores ways that students are re-imagining and engaging with their own education to develop emergent spaces that challenge violence and insecurity related to colonial legacies.

We are looking for an upper-year student with research experience (ideally including interviews and/or questionnaires) to conduct research on the history of Global College and the human rights program. We would like to gather qualitative and quantitative data about who are student are, why they chose U of W and human rights, and what careers and educational paths they chose afterwards. The data would be used to promote Global College and the human rights program, to recruit future students, to increase our alumni engagement and connection, possibly to develop an alumni-student mentorship program, and to use internally to track student recruitment trends and alumni paths. An expected output would be a report from which we could subsequently draw on relevant data, and integrate into promotional and other materials.
