"Our friendship is made up of these brief frenzied exchanges, but the quality of our conversation, for all its feverish outpouring, is genuine."

About the Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence

Carol Shields as The University of Winnipeg ChancellorIn 1988, Carol Shields was The University of Winnipeg Writer-in-Residence. Eight years later she became UWinnipeg'’s Chancellor.

Carol saw the extraordinary in ordinary people, in her characters and in those she encouraged. Countless writers, including some UWinnipeg professors, have a career defining “Carol story.” From “out-of-the-blue” phone calls encouraging they apply for grants, to letters asking they submit to Dropped Threads. The Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence [PDF] keeps this quality in Carol alive as an important piece of her legacy.

In November 2012 The University of Winnipeg Department and UWinnipeg Foundation joined forces to replenish the funds used to keep the Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence running. Together our goals are as follows:

1. Create a $500,000 Endowment

2.
Maintain the Terms of the Residence [PDF] as originally instated by the Shields Family

3.
Compile a list of Friends of the Program [PDF] - for financial support and to spread the story of Carol Shields

Since launching the Campaign in November, 2012, we have already raised over $35,000 from Friends around the world. Your friendship to the Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence is essential. This Program was created by the Shields Family but it is the love of those she touched and inspired who safeguard it, ensuring Carol’s legacy lasts forever.

Become a Friend of the Program

Friends receive letters and updates from the UWinnipeg English Department, advance notice to readings and lectures and the unique opportunity to become a part of Carol’s beautiful legacy. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Cindy Doyle, Development Officer – Major Gifts, by email at c.doyle@uwinnipeg.ca or by phone at 204.988.7509.

Don’t forget there are no rules on how to give. You can make a big impact by pledging a gift over time, or by matching pledges with a friend. For example, $150 a month over five years can cover more than half the cost of one year’s Writer-in-Residence or $15 a month from everyone in your book club or office can make a huge difference too!

Your generosity will enable us to continue supporting established writers, provide free literary outreach to the community and to foster the work of an up and coming author.

Help us ensure Carol’s legacy lasts forever, not just in her books, but also in the experiences that will result from the Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence.
