Hong Kong Canada Business Association creates $25K fund for UWinnipeg students

Fri. Jul. 22, 2022

The University of Winnipeg Foundation is pleased to announce the Hong Kong Canada Business Association (HKCBA) - Winnipeg Section has completed their funding of the Hong Kong Canada Business Association Travel Award.  Thanks to support from HKCBA members, supporters, and corporate sponsors, the fund has reached its $25,000 goal.

The HKCBA Travel Award was established to acknowledge the role former University of Winnipeg President Dr. Lloyd Axworthy played in helping Hong Kong during the transition to Chinese rule.  The award is open to current University of Winnipeg undergraduate and graduate students from any area of study who travel to Hong Kong or South East Asia for an academic or entrepreneurial purpose.

“We are grateful for the generous support from the HKCBA Winnipeg Section,” said Javier Schwersensky, President and CEO, The University of Winnipeg Foundation. “Exposure to different cultures and parts of the world enriches our understanding of business, research and culture. This unique new award opens doors for students interested in advancing their academic careers and broadens their horizons through travel opportunities that may not have been possible without financial support from generous members of our community like those of the HKCBA.”

“Current trade initiatives such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Canada-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement, Indo-Canada Free Trade Initiative - and many others in the region- make for exciting studies in a dynamic trade environment in Hong Kong.” said Alfonz Koncan, President of HKCBA Winnipeg Section. “We are thrilled to have reached our goal of $25,000 despite the challenges the global pandemic brought to our fundraising efforts, with special gratitude to the tireless work of Mr. Ken Wong, who was instrumental to our campaign”. Founded in 1984, HKCBA is one of the largest bilateral trade associations in Canada, with over 1,000 members in eight major cities from coast to coast.

The first Hong Kong Canada Business Association Travel Award will be available to qualifying candidates this coming fall.
