City of Winnipeg

Twice ranked a ‘Top7 Intelligent Community’ in the world by the Intelligent Community Forum, Winnipeg leads, innovates and inspires—and not just in one field but in many. There’s much more to our Prairie city than you might think.

Get connected to a dynamic cluster of information, communications and technology (ICT) innovators that include telecommunications firms, film and animation studios, computer system designers, electronic component manufacturers, aerospace industry, computer equipment providers and wire/cable suppliers. Winnipeg’s advanced fibre optics and digital switching platforms support geographic information systems, health informatics, agri informatics, consulting services and software development. Innovation and creativity are plugged into every industry, supported by Winnipeg’s economic advantages, talented professionals, and telecommunications infrastructure.

The information and communication technology (ICT) industry is critical to the global digital economy in Winnipeg and constitutes a key driver of productivity growth in the knowledge-based economy. The competitively low costs of doing business in Winnipeg help ICT companies achieve better profit margins, allowing them to reinvest more of their earning toward the development of new intellectual property assets or other growth strategies. The city’s highly skilled labour force, well-connected and innovative developer community, and world-class education infrastructure strengthen the advantage ICT firms experience in Winnipeg.

ICT firms in Winnipeg are able to address multiple vertical markets because of the rich diversity of experience, expertise and skills in Winnipeg’s ICT workforce. There are a variety of high-tech employers in Winnipeg in the finance, insurance, manufacturing, life sciences and health-care sectors.

More than ever, ICT startups are loving Winnipeg. SkipTheDishes is disrupting North America’s food-delivery business with its proprietary algorithms, Bold Commerce is helping online retailers sell goods through its Shopify and YouTube applications, Permission Click is revolutionizing the way parents give consent for their children to participate in school-led field trips, and Farmers Edge is using big data to develop predictive modelling that helps farmers make more money.

Winnipeg’s strength is its diversity, and its newest champions are writing history. In October, you’re invited to see how Winnipeg’s past and present have primed the city for an even more remarkable tomorrow.
