Dr. Camilo Valderrama is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Computer Science at the University of Winnipeg. He also holds adjunct appointments in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Manitoba.
His research focuses on developing data-driven methodologies that integrate machine learning, statistical modeling, and signal processing to support patient safety, reduce risk, and promote well-being. He has applied this research to different areas, including affordable fetal monitoring for underserved communities, the identification of redundant laboratory tests in intensive care units, the protection of children from unhealthy food advertising, and the validation of neuromarketing principles. His work emphasizes translating advanced computational methods into practical tools that improve decision-making and health outcomes.
Before joining the University of Winnipeg, Dr. Valderrama was a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Calgary. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science with a concentration in Biomedical Informatics from Emory University, and earned both his M.Sc. in Informatics and B.Sc. in Software Systems Engineering from Universidad Icesi in Cali, Colombia.
