English Language Program

The University Of Winnipeg English Language Program is an official testing site for the CanTEST
(Canadian Test of English for Scholars and Trainees).


  • The CanTEST is a standardized English proficiency test used to determine if you are able to meet admission requirements of Canadian post-secondary institutions or fluency requirements of professional licensing associations.
  • The scores will also give you some idea of how much additional English language training you may need.

Test Options

There are several options for the Official CanTEST.  Please check your faculty of admissions for entrance criteria. It is up to the candidate to check with his/her program of study to determine which sections of the test are required for admissions. You may need Basic only, or Basic + Speaking.

Basic CanTEST : Listening, Reading and Writing $140.00
Listening, Reading and Writing (Basic) plus Speaking $200.00
Speaking Test (only) $ 60.00
Writing (re-test only) $ 60.00

To Register

The registration deadline: June 13, 2017

  • If space permits, we will accept LATE applications until the deadline, but all applications received after deadline are subject to a $10.00 late registration fee.
  • Absolutely NO applications will be accepted after Friday, June 16, 2017
  • Refunds can only be issued, minus a $50 administrative fee, prior to June 6, 2017

Test Day Schedule

Please report to the testing room at the time for the section(s) of the test you are taking.

8:00-9:00 am - Sign-in with government issued photo ID

9:00-9:50 am - WRITING

9:50-10:00 am - Break

10:00-11:10 am - READING: Skim & Scan and Reading

11:10-11:20 am - Break

11:20 am-12:30 pm - LISTENING

12:30-1:00 pm - Break

1:30- 4:00 pm - ORAL INTERVIEWS 

Important Test Day Information

  • Photo Identification must be government issued,clearly stating your name and date of birth. (Passport, Permanent Resident Card, Driver's License etc).
  • University or College student ID cards will not be accepted as they do not state your date of birth.
  • No cell phones, dictionaries, or translators are allowed in the test room
  • Latecomers to the test will not be seated
  • Paper will be supplied by The University of Winnipeg
  • Please bring several pencils with erasers to use for the test
  • Bottled drinks are allowed during the test

Test Results

  • Participant results will be processed and mailed within 10 business days of the test date. ( Date of receipt is subject to Canada Post).  It is the responsibility of the participant to ensure that contact information provided at the time of registration is current and accurate.
  • Scores cannot be released verbally, by email, or by phone under any circumstances.
  • Unofficial results are automatically sent to each testing candidate, The University of Winnipeg International Office and The University of Manitoba English Language Centre.
  • To send an Official Score Report to any specific faculty at The University of Winnipeg, The University of Manitoba, or any other institution you must complete a Request for Official Score Report form. The cost is $15.00 per request. Click HERE to download the form. CanTEST scores are valid for a two year period from the test date. Under no circumstances will Official Score Report be issued to any institution after test scores have expired.

Request for Re-evaluation

Candidates who wish to have their scores re-evaluated must submit an appeal request form with payment within 20 business days of the test. Telephone requests are NOT accepted. Chances are very slim that an error was made in computing scores for Listening and Reading, but should you want a re-evaluation, there is a fee. Your appeal form must be returned with the necessary payment which is $30 fee. Please note that your test was originally scored by two trained readers who conferred before assigning the final score.
