English Language Program

A Canadian Homestay Experience!

Homestay Welcome

The UWinnipeg Homestay Program is for University of Winnipeg students. Students who choose this option are matched with an English-speaking host family for the duration of their studies. Living with a local family, couple or single person can be a good way to familiarize yourself with your new environment. It is also a further opportunity to practice your English language skills and learn about Canadian life and culture. The University of Winnipeg has had an active and successful Host Family Program for many years. Host families are screened and selected carefully.

The main role of the Host Family is to provide you with a safe, functional, and comfortable home environment where you feel at ease and are encouraged to use your English skills. Host Families will to greet you at the airport and  provide you with a private, furnished room, internet, and food for 3 meals a day. All homes are near a convenient bus route that are no further than forty minute trip by a direct bus to downtown and the University of Winnipeg.

Open your home to an international student and enjoy a cross-cultural exchange that will provide lasting memories for your family!

The most important criteria for a Host Family is a genuine desire to share their family life with an international student. We are now compiling a waiting list of families interested in being considered for our Host Family Program. Once your name is on the waiting list, you will be contacted to set up a home visit, as the need arises, for new host families. The main role of the Host Family is to provide a safe, functional and comfortable home environment within which the student feels at ease and is encouraged to use her or his English skills. The Host Family is required to speak English with the international student at all times. Host families are expected to provide a furnished private bedroom and meals for the student.

All Hosts are required to have a Police Information Check (vulnerable sector included) and a Child Abuse Registry completed. If you are interested in hosting our Collegiate students (under 18 years), you will be required to submit both Police Information Check completed (Vulnerable sector included) and a Child Abuse Registry completed. To find information about obtaining a Police Information Check, please click here.
