Evening and Online Courses

These part-time courses strengthen general, professional or academic English language skills and are held either in-class on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. OR online. This program is for Canadian citizens, permanent residents, refugee claimants, temporary foreign workers, visitors, and international students. Note: Funded program opportunities are currently not available.

Dates: January 10 - April 2, 2019

Application Deadline: December 20, 2018

Application Fee: First-time application fee of $120.

Tuition Fee: $500 per course.

Course Descriptions

English for General Purposes Part I and II        

  • Beginner courses that develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills for everyday communication.
  • Skills are developed through in class and online exercises.
  • Option to enter Part II directly with appropriate language level.
  • For language levels: CLB Level:1-4, IELTS:4.5 and under, CanTest:2.5 and under

English for Intermediate Communication Part I and II          

  • Intermediate courses that develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills for academic and workplace contexts
  • Skills are developed through in class and online exercises.
  • Option to enter Part II directly with appropriate language level.
  • Complete Part II with a minimum grade of 80% to be eligible for English for Academic or Professionals Purpose courses.
  • For language levels: CLB Level: 5/6, IELTS: 5.0/5.5, CanTest: 3.0/3.5

English for Academic Learning and Speaking     

  • Advanced speaking and listening course that develops English language and academic preparation skills needed in university or college.
  • Skills are developed through in class and online exercises.
  • Complete this course with a minimum grade of C+ and receive three credits towards an undergraduate degree.
  • For language levels: CLB Level: 7, IELTS: 6.0, CanTest: 4. 0

English for Business Professionals  

  • Advanced course for internationally educated business professionals that develops communication skills required for the professional workplace.
  • Skills are developed through in class and online exercises.
  • For language levels: CLB Level: 7, IELTS: 6.0, CanTest: 4.0             

English for Academic Writing Part I and II    

  • Advanced writing course that develops academic writing skills necessary for university or college.
  • This course is offered in class and online.
  • Part I must be completed before taking Part II.
  • Students who complete Part I and II with a minimum grade of C+ meet the English language requirement of UWinnipeg and receive three credits towards an undergraduate degree. Learn more about UWinnipeg's language requirements.
  • For language levels: CLB Level: 7, IELTS: 6.0, CanTest: 4.0

Speaking and Pronunciation - NEW 

  • Advanced speaking and pronunciation course where students develop skills through in-class and online exercises.
  • For language levels: CLB Level: 7, IELTS: 6.0, CanTest: 4.0

Course Placement

Students are placed into courses based on their currently English level. Students who do not have a previous test score can take a free online placement test to determine their level. The test is offered at the end of August and beginning of September.
