English Language Program


Mini Courses (5 weeks)

These “mini” courses help students develop their English skills for general, academic or work-related purposes. They are offered part-time for five weeks for a total of 30 class hours. Mini-courses are ideal for students who prefer to take shorter courses. They also benefit students who are unable to register for regular, 12 week courses.

The Beginner and Intermediate courses are held from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Advanced courses are held from 6:00-9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays; Advanced students also complete one online class per week at flexible times.

Dates: February 28 - April 2, 2019

Application fee: First-time application fee of $120

Tuition Fee: $325 per course

Regular Courses (12 weeks)

These part-time courses strengthen general, professional or academic English language skills and are held in class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Skills are developed through in class and online exercises. This program is for Canadian citizens, permanent residents, refugee claimants, temporary foreign workers, visitors, and international students. 

Dates: January 10 - April 2, 2019

Application Deadline: December 20, 2018

Application Fee: First-time application fee of $120

Tuition Fee: $500 per course


Course Descriptions

Beginner: Level 1 and 2      

  • These courses focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills for everyday communication.
  • Required language level: CLB Level:1-4, IELTS:4.5 and under, CanTest:2.5 and under

Intermediate: Level 3 and 4         

  • These courses focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills for academic and workplace contexts
  • Required language level: CLB Level: 5/6, IELTS: 5.0/5.5, CanTest: 3.0/3.5

Advanced:

English for Academic Learning and Speaking Part I and II  

  • This course focuses on advanced, academic speaking and listening skills needed for university or college.
  • Complete both parts of this course with a minimum grade of C+ and receive three credits towards an undergraduate degree.
  • Required language level: CLB Level: 7, IELTS: 6.0, CanTest: 4. 0

English for Business Professionals  

  • This course is for internationally educated business professionals who wish to develop communication skills required for the professional workplace.
  • Required language level: CLB Level: 7, IELTS: 6.0, CanTest: 4.0             

English for Academic Writing Part I and II    

  • This advanced writing course helps students develop academic writing skills necessary for university or college.
  • Students must complete Part I before taking Part II.
  • Students who complete Part I and II with a minimum grade of C+ meet the English language requirement of UW and receive three credits towards an undergraduate degree. Learn more about UW's language requirements.

Speaking and Pronunciation

  • This advanced speaking and pronunciation course helps students improve their speaking skills and pronunciation skills for general and workplace purposes.
  • Required language level: CLB Level: 7, IELTS: 6.0, CanTest: 4.0

Course Placement

Students are placed into courses based on their current English level. Students who do not have a previous test score can take a free online placement test to determine their level. The test is offered before the program starts.
