Diversity Foods

The University of Winnipeg Community Renewal Corporation

In March 2009, UWCRC took on the responsibility for managing the food services for The University of Winnipeg. Later that year, UWCRC and SEED Winnipeg created a joint venture called Diversity Food Services.

Having recently built the McFeetors Hall Student Residence, the University created a need for a food service provider that could adequately provide for the students on the meal plan as well as meet the existing demand for daily cafeteria services and catering needs (both external and internal to the University). Diversity's business plan pushed campus dining standards to a new level at the University of Winnipeg and created a plan for a long-term community building initiative.

During the exploratory process, the UWCRC articulated the desire to establish an enterprise that would deliver high quality food, integrate social/environmental goals, and be a positive force in creating employment for members of the Winnipeg community with barriers to employment.

The community embraced Diversity's business model and Diversity quickly hired and trained a staff of new Canadians, Aboriginals, neighbourhood residents and University students. To date, Diversity's staff has grown to 75.
