   Riley PostDoctoral Fellow for 2022 Dr. Jon Malek

Jon G. Malek received his PhD from Western University in March 2019 and graduated as a member of the Migration and Ethnic Relations collaborative graduate program. His dissertation studied the various factors that affected Filipino immigration to Canada, and his research interests include Canadian immigration, the Filipino diaspora, and post-colonial Filipino identity. He has published on history and memory and on Filipino identity in the diaspora through ethnic media and a history of Filipinos in Canada in the Canadian Historical Association’s Immigration and Ethnicity booklet series. In addition to his research, he engages the community through service as sitting as a board member of the Manitoba Association of Filipino Teachers and contributing articles to the Pilipino Express.

 

As Riley Postdoctoral Fellow, Jon will be starting a new research project on Filipino food and its intersections with culture, identity, and colonialism.
