43rd ANNUAL WESMEN CLASSIC
The 2009 Wesmen Classic season is upon us. Its a Winnipeg Christmas tradition. For all the tournament information including draws and results from the Winnipeg Sun Community Classic, International Classic, Ranger Insurance High School Girls Classic, adidas Junior Varsity Classic and the Wesmen Classic (high school and university), please go to www.wesmen.ca The 43rd Annual Wesmen Classic will be taking place from December 27-30 at the Duckworth Centre. The tournament will feature eight of the top mens high school teams in Winnipeg and eight teams from Canadian Universities including our very own Winnipeg Wesmen. SUPER WEEKEND RECAP
It was a Super Weekend at the Duckworth Centre with all four Wesmen teams in action twice in a span of three days. Friday night the Womens Basketball team extended their winning streak to three games with a 67-63 victory over UBC. Jessica Stromberg led the Wesmen with 16 points and 10 rebounds. In the late game the number two ranked UBC Thunderbirds beat the Wesmen 89-54. Peter Lomuro scored a game high 19 points. Saturday saw all four Wesmen teams hit the court on the same day. Volleyball took centre stage in the afternoon. The Womens Volleyball team was impressive defeating Thompson Rivers 3-1 (25-20, 25-16, 15-25, 25-23). Lauren Sears and Alix Krahn led the team with 12 kills. Later that afternoon the Mens Volleyball team snapped a four match losing streak defeating Thompson Rivers 3-1 (27-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-18). Andrew Town led the way with a match high 17 kills. In the evening basketball took to the court in front of hundreds of players and their families for WMBA Night. The Womens Basketball team were edged 60-50 by the Victoria Vikes. Alex MacIver and Amy Ogidan had 12 points to lead the Wesmen. In the final game of the night, the Mens basketball team dropped a 72-47 decision to the Victoria Vikes. Eric Zimmerman scored 10 points for the Wesmen. On Sunday afternoon the Wesmen Volleyball teams completed a weekend sweep for their respective teams. The Womens team defeated the Wolfpack 3-1 (25-15, 25-21, 17-25, 25-21). Ariel Smith, Lauren Sears and Carleen Kruschel each finished with 13 kills. The Mens team completed their sweep over the Wolfpack with an impressive 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-23) win to close out the Super Weekend. Justin Duff led the team with a match high 16 kills.

DIG, SET, SERVE, PASS, SPIKE VOLLEYBALL SKILLS CLINICS
Volleyball skills clinics for girls and boys, grades 7-12 are being offered at the University of Winnipeg during the month of December. Naoki Miyashita, former Head Coach of the Canadian Women's National Team and current Wesmen Assistant Coach will be the instructor. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Justin Duff, mens volleyball Duff, fourth year middle was impressive in leading the Wesmen to pair of important victories over Thompson Rivers this past weekend. In Sundays match the 67 powerhouse had a match high 16 kills to lead the Wesmen to a 3-0 sweep over the Wolfpack.

Top ten in several Canada West categories including: 2nd in hitting percentage (.457), 4th total points (155) and 7th in kills (3.47 kills per game)
Lauren Sears, womens volleyball Sears, in her third year with the Wesmen was instrumental in helping the Wesmen to a two match sweep over Thompson Rivers. In Saturdays opening match, Sears had 12 kills, four service aces, three digs and four blocks in a 3-1 victory over the Wolfpack.
