WESMEN GIVE BISONS ALL THEY COULD HANDLE
The third ranked University of Manitoba had to fight their way to a 3-0 (26-24, 29-27, 25-20) win over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night in front of 1065 spectators at the Duckworth Centre.
Manitoba opened up the first set leading 8-6 at the first technical timeout only to see the Wesmen fight back scoring four straight points to overtake the lead at 10-8. The teams continued to battle and exchange points until the second technical with the Wesmen holding a slim 16-15 lead. The teams exchanged points in the late stages of the set as Manitoba had a chance to close out the opening set leading 24-23 only to have Sonia Rossy of the Wesmen come thru with a kill to knot the score at 24-24. A kill by Kristi Hunter combined with a Wesmen attack error gave the Bisons the opening set at 26-24.
The battle between cross town rivals continued in the second set with Manitoba holding on to an 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout. The two teams exchanged points to the second break with Manitoba holding a 16-14 advantage. The Bisons looked to be on the verge of closing out the second set leading 18-16 when the Wesmen rattled off six straight points to take a 22-18 lead. The Bisons regained themselves after a timeout and evened the set at 22-22. The teams exchanged points all the way to 27-27 until Manitoba closed out the set with a kill and an ace by Samantha Loewen to win the second set 29-27.
The Bisons controlled the third set early on leading 8-5 at the first break only to see the determined Wesmen fight back to trail 16-15 at the second timeout. The Bisons closed out the third set on a 9-5 run to win the final set 25-20.
Sarah Morrissette led the Bisons with a match high 15 kills. Ashley Voth had 11 and Kate Wasyliw added 10 kills. Voth and Morrissette led the Bisons with 15 defensive digs. Voth led the Bisons with four blocks.
Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with 11 kills. Sonia Rossy and Lauren Sears had nine. Smith and Rossy finished with 15 defensive digs. Alix Krahn had four blocks and two service aces. First year setter Rhea White finished with 32 set assists.
Despite the loss Wesmen Head Coach Diane Scott added "The team played a great match tonight, we were aggressive and tough. We took another step up from last week and I believe there is more to come".
The Bisons improve their record to 5-2 while the Wesmen sit at 1-4. Manitoba will play host to Trinity Western next Friday and Saturday. The Wesmen will head to Brandon to take on the Bobcats on Friday and Saturday.

BISONS EDGE WESMEN IN FOUR
In a battle between two of the top teams in the tough Canada West Conference, the Manitoba Bisons defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 25-15) Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.
The Bisons came into the match ranked sixth while the Wesmen were right behind at number seven.
The two teams were relatively even in the beginning of the opening set. The Wesmen led 8-7 at the first technical timeout only to see Manitoba take the advantage at the second break 16-15. Winnipeg struggled down the stretch committing six attack errors enabling the Bisons to win the first set 25-18.
The beginning of the second set belonged to Wesmen middle Maurice Williams. Williams added a kill and was in on three blocks to help the Wesmen to an 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout. The teams traded points to make the score tied at 15-15 until Winnipeg grabbed a 16-15 lead after a Manitoba service error. Key kills down the stretch by Marc Ross, Justin Duff and Andrew Town enabled Winnipeg to tie the match winning set number two 25-23.
After jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead in the third set, Manitoba responded with five straight points to lead 5-2 on their way to an 8-4 lead at the first break. The Bisons held on to their lead at the second break leading 16-12 and went on to win the third set 25-23.
The Bisons had the Wesmen reeling in the fourth set jumping out to a 13-4 lead before eventaully closing out the match winning the fourth set 25-15.
Dane Pischke led the Bisons with a match high 19 kills. Steve Goertzen added 11. Chris Voth finished with 10. Zack Diboll was the leader in digs with 18. Goertzen was also in on six blocks.
Justin Duff led the Wesmen with 14 kills and four blocks. Andrew Town had 12. Maurice Williams finished with nine kills and four blocks. Dan Lother led the team in digs with 14.
The Bisons (4-3) will host Trinity Western next weekend. The Wesmen (2-3) will travel to Brandon to take on the Brandon Bobcats next Friday and Saturday.

WESMEN FALL SHORT IN LOSS TO BISONS
The visiting Winnipeg Wesmen fell short in a 67-57 loss to the Manitoba Bisons Saturday night at the University of Manitoba.
Kayla Klassen led Manitoba with a game high 19 points, including five-three pointers. Mubo Illelaboye added 15 points. Kait Flett had 13.
Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Randie Gibson had 12 (four-three pointers. Jessica Stromberg had 10. Mackenzie Prasek finished with six assists.
The Wesmen jumped out to a quick 7-5 lead with the game barely three minutes old. The last seven minutes of the opening frame was a nightmare for the Wesmen, who were unable to score a point. The Bisons took advantage of the situation scoring 12 unanswered points to take a 17-7 lead after one quarter.
Winnipeg regained their composure in the second. Manitoba led 26-16 when Winnipeg scored seven straight points to cut the Bison lead to 26-23. The Wesmen carried the play for the tail end of the quarter scoring six of the next eight points to take a 29-28 lead at halftime.The teams exchanged baskets for the opening three minutes of the third to even the score at 35-35. The Bisons gained control, reeling off 10 straight points to take a 45-35 with over four minutes to play. Manitoba held a 53-45 lead after three quarters.
In a tight defensive fourth quarter of play, Manitoba outscored the Wesmen 14-12 to make the final 67-57 in Manitoba's favor.
Winnipeg was forced to play without starting guard Catie Gooch, who was suffering from the flu.
"It was tough playing without Catie, she is our point guard and leading scorer. We struggled as a team this game", added Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay.Winnipeg (2-3) will host the Brandon Bobcats at the Duckworth Centre next Friday and Saturday. Game time both nights is 6:00 p.m. The Bisons will travel to Lethbridge to take on the Pronghorns for two games.

BISONS UPEND WESMEN
The Manitoba Bisons defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 92-79 Saturday night at the University of Manitoba.Nathan Dixon led Manitoba with a game high 32 points, six-three pointers and eight assists. Eric Garcia added 17 points, Kurtis Sansreget had 13.
Nick Lother led the Wesmen with 22 points, three-three pointers and seven assists. Peter Lomuro had 18 points and three steals. Ben Kingdon finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
"We battled hard but were inconsistent on both sides of the floor and it cost us", added Wesmen Head Coach Dave Crook.
In the first quarter, the opening basket did not come until the two miute mark. Once the teams were warmed up the scoring came at a fast pace. Manitoba led 22-14 after the opening quarter.
The second quarter was an offensive explosion with both teams scoring 27 points. Manitoba went into the halftime break leading by a score of 49-41.
Winnipeg cut into the Bison lead in the opening four miutes of the third, trailing 56-50. Manitoba responded going on a 11-4 run to extend their lead to 67-54 with 3:06 left. Eric Zimmerman and Craig Penniston led the Wesmen on a 11-2 run to trail 69-65 with 21 seconds left only to have Dixon drain a three with six seconds left to give Manitoba a 72-65 lead after three.
Manitoba after a cautious opening four minutes extended their lead to double-digits to make the final 92-79.The loss drops the Wesmen's record to 0-5 and will host the Brandon Bobcats on Friday and Saturday nights at the Duckworth Centre. Game time both nights is 8:00 p.m. Manitoba will travel to Lethbridge for a two game series against the Pronghorns.
