PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Andrew Town, mens volleyball
Town, in his fifth year started the 2009-2010 season where he left off last season. Town was instrumental in helping the Wesmen capture first place at the Brandon University Invitational Tournament this past weekend. Andrew was at his best in Saturdays final against Brandon registering 18 kills and was named the Tournament MVP.
Ariel Smith, womens volleyball
Smith, in her second year with the Wesmen played a big part in helping the Wesmen to a pair of victories at this past weekends Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge. In Friday nights five set thrilling win against Regina, Smith led the team with 15 kills and nine digs and was named the Wesmen Player of the Match.
19TH ANNUAL DUCKWORTH CHALLENGE BEGINS TUESDAY NIGHT
It is that time of the year again, the 19th annual Duckworth Challenge will take place at the University of Winnipeg this Tuesday night. The Wesmen Volleyball teams will battle their cross town rivals, the Manitoba Bisons. Once again fans can get their Bisons BBQed, as Bison Burgers will be served hot off the grill from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m as you enter the Duckworth Centre. The action begins at 6:00 p.m. with the women's match followed by the men's match at 8:00 p.m. The basketball portion of the competition will take place the following night (Wednesday) at the University of Manitoba.
BOB FM SHOOTOUT GETS UNDERWAY FRIDAY NIGHT
The BOB FM Womens Basketball Shoot-Out will take place this Friday and Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. The host Wesmen will be challenging Lakehead University in a two game series. Game time both nights is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

ANDREA HUTCHENS ENTERS HALL OF FAME
Congratulations to former womens basketball team member Andrea Hutchens on her induction into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame this past weekend. Hutchens was a five year member of the Wesmen and was a starter for the team that won three consecutive CIS National Championships (1993-1995) and set a North American record of 88 consecutive wins. Andrea was named a two time All-Canadian in 1994 and 1995.
BASKETBALL MANITOBA SUPER COACHES CLINIC COMING OCT 23-24
Basketball Manitoba, the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg are excited to announce the details the first annual 'Super Coaches Clinic' weekend scheduled for October 23-24 at the University of Winnipeg Duckworth Centre. The clinic comes as a partnership with the University of Manitoba Bisons and University of Winnipeg Wesmen as a joint offering to the basketball community.
The clinic will run at the same time as the province wide 'SAG' in-service day on Friday October 23. The WMBA has also paused all league games this weekend to ensure each coach can attend and is covering the cost for all its league coaches to attend the sessions. The clinic features 14 different presentations over the two days and features a wide range of topics for all levels of basketball. Register today for Manitoba's premier basketball coaching event
WOMENS VOLLEYBALL SHOW POTENTIAL
The womens team was a determined and inspired group at the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge which took place at the Duckworth Centre this past week. The Wesmen compiled a record of 2-3 in the four day event. In Thursdays opening match The Brandon University Bobcats defeated the Wesmen 3-1 (16-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-16). The team picked up their first win of the tournament on Friday afternoon defeating Wilfred Laurier 3-2 (23-25, 25-10, 26-24, 19-25, 16-14). The team made it a perfect day defeating the Regina Cougars Friday night 3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 25-19, 19-25, 27-25) in a match that lasted over two hours. Winnipeg had a tough final day of the tournament on Saturday. The Wesmen were defeated 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-20) by Manitoba in the early match and were defeated 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 27-25) by the Toronto Varsity Blues in the late match. The team will now prepare to close out their pre-season schedule with a match against the Manitoba Bisons on Tuesday evening at the Duckworth Centre in the volleyball portion of the 19th Annual Duckworth Challenge. Match time is 6:00 p.m.
MENS VOLLEYBALL WIN BRANDON TOURNAMENT
The mens team started a busy week starting with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-22, 25-23) win over the University of Montreal on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre. The team headed west to Brandon to participate in the two-day Brandon Invitational Tournament. The team finished the event in first place with a record of 3-1. In the opening match on Friday afternoon the Bobcats defeated the Wesmen 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-18). The team evened its record Friday night with a 3-2 (25-23, 27-25, 23-25, 22-25, 15-5) victory over the Regina Cougars. Saturday morning Winnipeg defeated Montreal 3-2 (34-32, 25-22, 17-25, 28-30, 15-13) to finish the round robin in first place. The Wesmen ended the tournament on a winning note by defeating the host Brandon Bobcats 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-18, 25-20) in the final match on Saturday night. Andrew Town was named the tournament MVP. Justin Duff was named the Best Server and Marc Ross was named the Best Serve Receiver of the tournament. Winnipeg will host the Manitoba Bisons in the volleyball portion of the 19th Annual Duckworth Challenge Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m.
MENS BASKETBALL GEARING UP FOR SEASON
Head Coach Dave Crooks team is assembled for the 2009-2010 season. The team will feature a strong core of veteran players to go along with several first year Wesmen players who will be looking to make an impression this coming season. The team will take on the Manitoba Bisons in the basketball portion of the Duckworth Challenge Wednesday evening at the University of Manitoba. Game time is 8:00 p.m.

Tanya McKays team is made up for this season and is anxiously awaiting the start of the season. The team will be made up of several veterans and new players who will be looking to make some noise in the Canada West Conference this season. The team will have a busy week starting off by taking on the Manitoba Bisons in the basketball portion of the Duckworth Challenge on Wednesday evening at the University of Manitoba. Game time is 6:00 p.m. The Wesmen will host Lakehead for a two game series in the BOB FM Shootout on Friday and Saturday nights at the Duckworth Centre. Game time both nights is 7:00 p.m.
