43rd ANNUAL WESMEN CLASSIC RECAP
The University of Winnipeg Wesmen would like to thank all the sponsors, athletes, coaches, media and fans for making the 43rd Annual Wesmen Classic a huge success once again. In the month of December over 150 games and 1300 participants ranging in age from Grade 3 to University descended upon the Duckworth Centre to participate in one of the six Classics that took place.
The main section of the Classic held from Dec. 27 30 attracted over 10,000 spectators who enjoyed the finest in High School and University basketball. The winners during the month were as follows:

MENS BASKETBALL TAKE PART IN WESMEN CLASSIC
The mens basketball team participated in the 43rd Annual Wesmen Classic during the holidays. The team lost their opening game 68-62 to the Bishops Gaiters last Monday night. Peter Lomuro led the Wesmen with 16 points. Winnipeg moved on to the consolation semi-final the following evening and were defeated 78-70 by the Manitoba Bisons. Mike James led the team with 20 points. Winnipeg closed out the three day event on Wednesday night with a 77-70 loss to Thompson Rivers in the seventh place game. Mike James led the team in scoring with 20 points. The Wesmen did have something to brag about on Wednesday night. Second year player Christopher Jordan was the winner of the Slam Dunk Competition and walked away with the top prize.
WOMENS BASKETBALL HAVE IMPRESSIVE SHOWING IN CALGARY
The womens basketball team participated in the three day University of Calgary Invitational Tournament during the holiday break (Dec 28-30). In the teams opening game, the Wesmen came back from an 18 point deficit in the third quarter to defeat the Calgary Dinos 72-67. Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with 17 points. Catie Gooch followed with 16. The following night the Wesmen improved their record to 2-0 with a 79-73 win over the University of New Brunswick. Catie Gooch scored 18 points. Jessica Stromberg 17 and Amy Ogidan added a double-double 12 points and ten rebounds. On Wednesday night the Wesmen were defeated 72-64 by the Victoria Vikes. Catie Gooch led the team with 15 points and seven rebounds. Catie Gooch was named to the tournament all star team.
WOMENS VOLLEYBALL CONTINUE TO IMPRESS AT U OF T TOURNAMENT
Head Coach Diane Scott and her team traveled to Toronto to take part in the University of Toronto Invitational Tournament. The team opened up the three day tournament with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23) loss to Brock on Monday. Ariel Smith led the team with 15 kills and 16 digs. On Tuesday morning Winnipeg picked up their first win of the tournament defeating Dalhousie 3-1 (25-20, 25-16, 14-25, 25-22). Smith led the team with 14 kills. Kaelyn Gauthier added 12. In Tuesdays evening match, the host Toronto defeated Winnipeg 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-19). Alix Krahn led the team with nine kills. Alicia Perry added seven kills and three blocks. In the final match of the tournament on Wednesday morning UNB defeated Winnipeg 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-21). Ariel Smith led the team with seven kills and 10 digs.
MENS VOLLEYBALL IN SUNNY CLAIFORNIA
Head Coach Larry McKay and his team traveled to sunny California for a pair of exhibition matches against two NCAA Division One schools. On Wednesday night the Wesmen fell short in a tough 3-2 (30-25, 30-23, 29-31, 26-30, 16-14) loss to the UCLA Bruins. Justin Duff had a team high 18 kills. Matt Stubler finished with 10 digs. The team wrapped up their series on Saturday night with a 3-1 (30-27, 30-27, 22-30, 30-25) loss to the defending NCAA Division One champions, UC Irvine Anteaters. Duff led the team with 14 kills and six blocks.
