WESMEN START SECOND HALF ON WINNING NOTE
The Winnipeg Wesmen opened up the second half of the Canada West regular season with a solid 64-41victory over the University of Fraser Valley Cascades Friday evening in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
Randie Gibson led the Wesmen with a game high 14 points, including three-three pointers and six rebounds. Alex MacIver added 13 points and six rebounds. Catie Gooch finished with 11.
Jane Meadwell and Alyssa Gaukel led the Cascades with 10 points each. Gaukel finished with a game high 10 rebounds.
The Cascades held the lead for the first part of the opening quarter leading 7-6 at the midway point. The Wesmen grabbed the lead for the first time in the opening frame with a basket by Sarah Reilly followed by a pair of free throws by MacKenzie Prasek enabled the Wesmen to take the lead at 8-7 with four minutes to play in the quarter. The Wesmen extended their lead going on a 7-2 run to open up a 15-9 lead. The Cascades responded with a three pointer with 34 seconds left cut the Wesmen lead to 15-12 after the opening ten minutes.
The Cascades opened up the second quarter scoring five unanswered points to regain the lead at 17-15 four minutes into the middle frame. Winnipeg fought back with a two pointer from Kaitlin Rempel followed by a three pointer by Randie Gibson to give the Wesmen a 20-17 lead at the midway point of the quarter. Winnipeg reeled off five of the next six points to open up their largest lead of the opening half 25-18. The Cascades closed out the opening half on a 6-2 run to make the score 27-24 in Winnipegs favor at halftime.
The Wesmen took control in the third quarter sparked by an 8-1 run early on to open up a 37-28 lead. Winnipeg kept the pressure on the Cascades outscoring the home side 8-4 in a tight defensive final five minutes of the quarter to open up a double digit lead 45-32 after three quarters.
Winnipegs solid play continued in the fourth quarter, scoring 19 points in the quarter and holding the Cascades to only nine points.
The victory improves Winnipegs record to 6-4 in the tight Prairie Division standings of the Canada West Conference. The Cascades fall to 1-7 on the season. Winnipeg will head to Kamloops to prepare for Saturday evenings game against the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack. Game time is 7:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

WESMEN LOSE CLOSE ONE TO FRASER VALLEY
The Winnipeg Wesmen fell short in a 77-68 loss to the University of Fraser Valley Cascades Friday evening in Abbotsford, British Columbia.
The Cascades had four players scoring in double digits led by Kyle Grewal’s 16 points. Sam Freeman and Joel Friesen finished with 15 points. Jasper Moedt added 12. James Elliot had seven rebounds.
Nick Lother scored a game high 22 points, including three-three pointers to lead the Wesmen. Mike James and Eric Zimmerman both were next with 16 points. Mike James led the team with seven rebounds. Eric Zimmerma led the team in steals with three.
After the Cascades scored two baskets in the opening minute, the Wesmen settled down their play at both ends of the floor. The Cascades jumped out to a 12-9 when Nick Lother started a Wesmen run with a three point play, followed by a pair of free throws by Mike James and a highlight reel basket by Eric Zimmerman to give the Wesmen a 16-12 lead with two minutes left in the opening quarter. The Cascades regained the lead scoring five unanswered points to take a 17-16 lead after the opening frame.
The Wesmen jumped out to a 23-20 lead early on but the Cascades responded in a big way going on a 8-0 run in a two minute span to take a 28-23 lead with just over four minutes to play. The Wesmen settled back down as Lother drained a long three pointer, followed by a bucket by James Horaska to knot the score at 28-28. The Cascades took control scoring ten unanswered points, eight by Kyle Grewal to take a 38-28 lead. The Wesmen managed to cut the lead back to single digits in the final minute. The Cascades went into halftime leading 38-31.
The second half started out with Fraser Valley outscoring Winnipeg 9-3 to open up their largest lead of the game at 47-33. The Wesmen did not roll over and recovered in a big way by going on a 9-2 run to get right back into the game cutting the Cascade lead to 49-44 with just under three minutes to play. The Cascades led 58-50 after three quarters.
Winnipeg made a charge in the fourth quarter and cut the Fraser Valley lead to 63-62, outscoring the Cascades 12-5 in the opening five minutes but the home squad rebounded with a three point play to push the lead to 66-62 and from that point outscored the Wesmen 11-6 to sea the victory.
The victory improves the Cascades record to 5-4. The Wesmen remain winless at 0-10. The Wesmen will head to Kamloops to face the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack Saturday night. Game time is 9:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

WESMEN FALL TO WOLFPACK, EARN SPLIT ON ROAD TRIP
The Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack dashed the hopes of a Winnipeg road trip sweep defeating the Wesmen 79-67 Saturday night in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Winnipeg started the two game road trip with an impressive 64-41 victory last night against Fraser Valley in Abbotsford.
Kaitlyn Widsten led the Wolfpack with a game high 24 points. Jen Ju added 15 points, including three-three pointers and five assists. Kailey Colonna was the leader on the boards with 11.
Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with a double-double 16 points, 13 rebounds. Catie Gooch finished with 14, including four-three pointers. Alex MacIver had 12 and Randie Gibson added 11 points.
The Wolfpack started the contest on fire racing out to an 8-2 lead three minutes into the opening frame. A three pointer by Randie Gibson cut the Wolfpack lead to 8-5 only to see the Wolfpack score five straight points to open up a 13-5 lead. After a timeout, the Wesmen caught fire scoring eight straight points to knot the score at 13-13 with four minutes to play. Thompson Rivers outscored the Wesmen 10-4 down the stretch to lead 23-17 after the opening quarter.
In the second quarter the Wolfpack scored six straight points on a struggling Wesmen squad to open up their largest lead of the opening half 29-17. Catie Gooch scored Winnipeg’s first basket 4:25 into the frame to cut the lead to 29-20. The Wesmen caught fire scoring six of the next seven points to cut the Wolfpack lead to 30-26. Thompson Rivers went into the halftime break leading 37-30.
The Wesmen continued to trail in the early stages of a tight defensive style third quarter. The Wolfpack held a 47-39 lead with over three minutes to play. Winnipeg closed the gap going on a quarter closing 7-2 run to narrow the Wolfpack lead to 49-46 after three quarters.
The Wolfpack extended their lead outscoring the Wesmen 12-3 in the opening three minutes to open up a 61-49 lead. Winnipeg closed the gap to eight points on two occasions but the Wolfpack extended their lead to double digits to close out the contest.
Thompson Rivers improve to 3-7 on the year, the Wesmen fall to 6-5.

WOLFPACK BEAT WESMEN
The Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 94-60 Saturday night in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Fifth year guard Sean Garvey led the Wolfpack with a game high 30 points, including six-three pointers. Greg Stewart finished the contest with a double-double 17 points, 14 rebounds. Hudson Naylor added 10 points.
Nick Lother led the Wesmen with 18 points, including a pair of three pointers and four steals. Petrer Lomuro finished with 14 points and six rebounds.
The Wolfpack opened up a lead of 24-14 after the opening quarter and went on to outscore then Wesmen 17-13 in then second quarter to take a 41-27 lead into then halftime break.
Winnipeg struggled in the first half connecting on 8-of-31 shots from then field (26%) and 1-of-9 from three point territory.
The Wolfpack extended their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Wesmen 24-19 to take a 65-46 lead after three quarters.
Thompson Rivers closed out the contest outscoring the Wesmen 29-14 in the final quarter to make the final score 94-60.
The Wesmen finished the contest with a shooting percentage of 30%. The Wolfpack finished the game connecting on 46% from the field, including 57% in the second half.
The victory gives the Wolfpack their first win of the regular season (1-9)..The Wesmen remain winless at 0-11.
