SECOND HALF EXPLOSION LIFTS WESMEN PAST HORNS

A second half scoring explosion lifted the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 72-63 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns in a key Canada West battle Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The Wesmen outscored the Pronghorns 44-33 in the second half after trailing 30-28 at halftime.

Winnipeg improves to 9-7 on the regular season. Lethbridge falls to 7-9.

Catie Gooch, back in the Wesmen lineup after missing four games led the team with a game high 22 points, including five three pointers. Alex MacIver had her best game as a Wesmen scoring 20 points (8-of-9 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line) to go along with eight rebounds. Jessica Stromberg added a double-double 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Stephanie Price led the Pronghorns with 17 points. Lauren Taal added 15, including four-three pointers.Price and Kenzie Sheen led the team with six rebounds.

A hot shooting Lethbridge squad connected on 10-of-16 (63%) from the field in the opening quarter on their way to a 22-9 lead after the opening ten minutes of play.

Winnipeg went on an early 9-2 run in the second quarter to get back in the game cutting the Lethbridge deficit to 24-18 with under seven minutes to play. The Pronghorns scored six unanswered points to push their lead to double digits at 30-18 midway thru the quarter. The Wesmen regrouped scoring ten unanswered points to trail 30-28 at the halftime break.

MacIver was a perfect 6-for-6 (12 points) in the opening half.

The Wesmen grabbed their first lead of the game with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter when Catie Gooch drained one of her three-three pointers in the quarter to give the Wesmen a 33-32 lead. After two more three's by Gooch, the Wesmen led 39-34 with 4:00 to play in the third. The Wesmen outscored the Pronghorns 20-13 in the quarter to take a 48-43 lead into the final frame.

Winnipeg opened up the fourth quarter on a 10-6 run to open up their largest lead of the game at 58-49. Winnipeg went on to outscore Lethbridge 24-20 in the final frame to make the finbal score 72-63.

The two teams will wrap up their two game series Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 6:00 p.m. (CST)

PRONGHORNS DEFEAT WESMEN

The Lethbridge Pronghorns defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 87-58 in the opening game of a weekend series Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The win by the Pronghorn's evens their record on the season at 8-8. The Wesmen, still seeking their first victory of the regular season fall to 0-16.

Fourth year guard Jeff Price led the Pronghorns with a game high 17 points, six assists and two steals. Fellow fourth year guard Danhue Lawrence added a double-double 15 points, 11 rebounds. Randy Davis chipped in with 13 points.

Nick Lother led the Wesmen with 13 points. Eric Zimmerman and Peter Lomuro each added 12. Lomuro led the Wesmen  in rebounds with eight.

Winnipeg grabbed an early lead in the opening half of the first quarter jumping out to a quick 11-7 lead only to see the Pronghorns recover to hold a slim 20-18 lead after the opening frame.

In a tight defensive second quarter, Lethbridge managed to outscore the Wesmen 15-12 to take a 35-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Pronghorns broke the game wide open in the third quarter outscoring the Wesmen 31-13 to take a commanding 66-43 lead. Lethbridge was successful on 10-of-17 (59%) from the field in the third quarter, compared to 5-of-17 (29%) for the Wesmen.

Lethbridge closed out the contest outscoring the Wesmen 21-15 in the final frame.

The two teams will meet Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 8:00 p.m. (CST). 1290 CFRW will carry live play by play of the contest, with the pre game show starting at 7:45 p.m.

WESMEN DROP FIVE SETTER TO CLAN

The Winnipeg Wesmen lost a tough five setter 3-2 ( 25-23, 18-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-10) to the Simon Fraser University Clan Friday night in Burnaby, British Columbia.

The victory improves Simon Fraser's record to 2-14. The loss by the Wesmen leaves them with a record of 5-9.

Collen Douville led the Clan with 14 kills. KJ Fridfinnson added 11 kills. Brooks Halvorsen led the Clan with 17 defensive digs.

Sonia Rossy led the Wesmen with a match high 20 kills. Ariel Smith finished with 10. Danica Hughes and Carleen Kruschel led the team with 18 digs. Alix Krahn had four blocks

The Clan opened up the first set holding a slim 8-7 at the first technical but expanded their lead to 16-11 at the second break on their way to a 25-23 opening set win.

SFU gained the upper hand in the second set leading 8-7 before the Wesmen stormed back to take a 16-11 lead at the second technical break. Winnipeg went on to win the set 25-18.

The Wesmen carried the momentum into set number three, leading 8-7 and 16-11 on their way to winning the third set 25-23.

Winnipeg looked poised to close out the match leading 8-5 and 16-9 at the breaks in the fourth set before the Clan caught fire late in the set to win the fourth set 25-23 to force a fifth set.

The Wesmen led 10-9 late in the fifth set but the Clan scored six straight points to win the final set 15-10.

"We were too passive at key times. SFU played well, we will re-group and get back on track tomorrow night, added Wesmen Head Coach Diane Scott.

The two teams will meet Saturday night in the final match of the weekend series. Match time is 9:00 p.m. CST.

WESMEN DOWN PRONGHORNS IN DOUBLE OT

The Winnipeg Wesmen needed extra time to down the Lethbridge Pronghorns 85-77 in a double-overtime thriller Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The second overtime session was needed when fifth year Wesmen guard Jessica Stromberg calmly drained three free throws with eight seconds remaining in the first overtime to knot the score at 72-72.

The victory, the third in a row for the Wesmen improves their record to 10-7. The Pronghorns suffer their fourth loss in a row and fall to 7-10.

Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with a game high 27 points, including four-three pointers and four steals. Catie Gooch and Jessica Stromberg added 14. Alex MacIver and Mackenzie Prasek each put in 10 points. Stromberg led the Wesmen with a game high 13 rebounds.

Stephanie Price and Becky Heninger led the Pronghorns with 17 points each. Hannah Blanchette added 16 and Sam Hornquist added 11. Price led the team with eight rebounds and nine assists.

The Pronghorns opened up a 15-12 lead on a long three by Stephanie Price with four minutes to play in the opening frame. Winnipeg responded in a big way by going on a 11-2 run to open up a 23-17 lead after the opening quarter.

Lethbridge started the second quarter on an 8-0 run to take the lead at 25-23. Catie Gooch scored Winnipeg's first basket of the second quarter at the 6:15 mark to pull the Wesmen ahead 26-25. Winnipeg maintained the lead for the remainder of the quarter to take a 32-31 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter the Wesmen held on to a slim 39-37 lead three minutes into the quarter when the Pronghorns answerd back going on a 10-2 run to take a 45-39 lead late in the quarter. The Pronghorns led 50-45 after three quarters.

The Pronghorns held on to the lead for 9:47 of the final quarter and were up 65-63 with 39 seconds left when Wesmen guard Mackenzie Prasek drained a three pointer with 17 seconds left to force the first overtime period with the score tied at 66-66.

The Wesmen will head out on the road to Regina next weekend for two games against the Cougars. The Pronghorns will travel to Saskatoon to take on the Huskies for two games.

WESMEN FALL SHORT IN LOSS TO HORNS

The Lethbridge Pronghorns picked up their second win of the weekend, defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen 70-52 at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg on Saturday night.

Lethbridge won the opening game of the series 87-58 Friday evening.

The Pronghorn victory improves their record to 9-8. Winnipeg remains winless at 0-17.

Danhue Lawrence led the Pronghorns with a game high 16 points. Randy Davis finished with 13. Rob Cooper added 11. Derek Waldner grabbed a game high 11 rebounds.

Mike James led the Wesmen with 15 points and two steals. Nick Lother added 14 points and six assists. Peter Lomuro led the team in rebounds with seven.

After a close first quarter that saw the Pronghorns hold a slim 18-14 lead, Lethbridge took control of the game in the second quarter outscoring Winnipeg 15-2 to lead 33-16 at halftime.

The Wesmen played a better third quarter, but were outscored 19-16 as the Pronghorns extended their lead to 52-32 after three quarters.

Winnipeg closed out the contest outscoring the visitors 20-18 in the final frame.

Winnipeg will travel to Regina next weekend to take on the Cougars. Lethbridge will take on the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon.

WESMEN DEFEAT CLAN TO GAIN SPLIT

The Winnipeg Wesmen gained a weekend split in their two match series against the Simon Fraser Clan with an impressive 3-1 (26-24, 25-23, 20-25, 25-16) victory Saturday evening in Burnaby, British Columbia.

The Clan won the opening match Friday night in five sets (3-2).

The victory improves the Wesmen's record to 6-9. Simon Fraser falls to 2-15.

Sonia Rossy led the Wesmen with 13 kills. Ariel Smith finished with 12 followed by Lauren Sears with 11. Carleen Kruschel led the team in digs with 24. Alix Krahn was in on five blocks.

Colleen Douville led the Clan with a match high 22 kills. Krystyna Adams finished with 10. Brooke Halvorsen led the team with 20 digs.

Winnipeg led at both technical timeouts of the opening set 8-5 and 16-12. Simon Fraser faught back to tie the score at 23-23, before the Wesmen faught off set point (24-23) to score three points in a row to win the opening set 26-24.

The Wesmen carried the momentum into set number two leading 8-4 and 16-13 at the timeouts. The Clan once again managed to tie the score at 23-23 when back-to-back kills by Sonia Rossy gave the Wesmen a 25-23 second set win.

Simon Fraser led in the third set 8-6 at the first timeout only to see the Wesmen fight back to lead 16-14 at the second break. SFU pulled ahead 21-20 and went on to score four straight points to win the third set 25-20.

Winnipeg dominated the fourth set jumping out to a quick leads of 8-2 and 16-8 at the set breaks before eventually closing out the match with a 25-16 win in set four.

The Wesmen will head home to prepare for Wednesday's match against Manitoba at the U of M. The Wesmen will host the Regina Cougars at the Duckworth Centre on Friday and Saturday.
