SPARTANS EDGE WESMEN IN FIVE SET THRILLER

The Winnipeg Wesmen gave the fifth ranked Trinity Western University Spartans all they could handle and more on this night. The Spartans defeated the Wesmen 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 15-8) in a five set thriller Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The Spartans with the win improve to 8-7 on the season while the Wesmen fall to 5-7.

Kim Klassen led the Spartans with 16 kills. Amy Leschied and Kara JansenVanDoorn added 15 each and Carmen Dyck finished with 11. Andrea Ball led the team with 27 digs. Jansen VanDoorn had two blocks and a pair of service aces.

Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with a match high 19 kills. Ariel Smith was next with 18. Alix Krahn finished with 10. Sonia Rossy led the Wesmen in digs with 30. Krahn and lauren Sears each had two blocks. Krahn, Sears and Danica Hughes each served up a pair of aces.

The Wesmen led 8-7 at the first technical timeout of the opening set only to asee the Spartans regroup to take a 16-14 lead at the second break. The Wesmen responded in a big way running off four straight points to take a 18-16 lead late in the set. Winnipeg went on to win the opening set 25-22.

The Spartans started the second set on a positive note leading 8-7 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts. The Spartans would go on to even the match, winning the second set 25-18.

The Wesmen took early control of the third set leading 8-5 at the first technical only to see the Spartans rally to lead 16-15 at the second break. Key kills by Ariel Smith and Carleen Kruschel in the final moments of the third set propelled the Wesmen to a 25-23 victory in the set.

In the fourth set, the Wesmen started out on a 8-3 run only to see the Spartans come back to take a 16-15 lead at the second set break. The Spartans would hold on down the stretch to win the fourth set 25-23.

Both teams started the fifth set exchanging points to a score of 5-4 in the Spartans favor. Aftet that Trinity Western scored five unanswered points to take a 10-4 and would close out the match winning the set 15-8.

Notes: Trinity finished the match with seven blocks, Winnipeg had six. The Wesmen had seven service aces compared to five for the Spartans. The Spartans had an attack percentage of .255, Winnipeg finished with .187.

The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (CST)

WESMEN BEAT FIFTH RANKED SPARTANS

WESMEN def Trinity Western (25-18, 19-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-12)

The Winnipeg Wesmen extended their Canada West regular season winning streak to five matches with a thrilling 3-2 (25-18, 19-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-12) victory Friday night in Winnipeg against the fifth ranked Trinity Western University Spartans.

The Wesmen ended their first half of the season in November with a sweep over Thompson Rivers and started the second half with a sweep last weekend in Saskatoon over the Huskies.

Winnipeg improves their record to 7-5. The Spartans fall to 8-5 in the close Canada West Conference standings.

Fourth year middle Justin Duff led the Wesmen with a match high 23 kills and four blocks. Andrew Town finished with 12 kills. First year left side Matt Schriemer added 10 kills. Marc Ross led the Wesmen with 14 digs.

Steven Marshall led the Spartans with 15 kills and nine digs. Marc Howatson added 13 kills and eight digs, Rudy Verhoeff finished with 11 kills.

The teams took turns in the early stages of the match showing their dominance. The hometown Wesmen won the first set in decisive fashion 25-18 but the Spartans responded taking the second set 25-19.

In the third set the Wesmen stormed out to an 8-3 lead at the first technical timeout, thanks to a 6-0 run to open the set. Winnipeg eventually went on to win the third set 25-21.

The Spartans forced a fifth and deciding set with an impressive 25-19 win in set number four. The Spartans finished the set with an attack percentage of .484.

Winnipeg held the lead for the majority of the fifth set and with the score at 11-10, Andrew Town put away three kills in a row to up the Wesmen lead to 14-10. Winnipeg would go on to win the final set 15-12.

Notes: In an even match between the two Canada West rivals, Winnipeg finished with an attack percentage of .237 to .217 for the Spartans. Winnipeg held a slim advantage in blocks at 8-7. The Spartans added six service aces compared to two for Winnipeg.

The Wesmen and Spartans will close out their two match series Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is 6:00 p.m. (CST)

WESMEN FALL TO NUMBER ONE CLAN

The Winnipeg Wesmen were defeated 85-50 by the Simon Fraser University Clan Friday night in Burnaby, British Columbia.

The victory improves the Clans record to 12-0. The Wesmen fall to an even 7-7.

Robyn Buna led the Clan with 23 points, including seven-three pointers.

Amy Ogidan and Danielle Baril led the Wesmen with 12 points each.

The Clan jumped out to a 27-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, and never looked back. By halftime SFU had pushed their advantage to 43-24, and led 59-36 heading into the fourth quarter. In the first half Simon Fraser shot 50 per cent from the field (16-for-32) and finished the game connecting on 11-of-33 three-point attempts.

Winnipeg will take on the Trinity Western University Spartans Saturday night in Langley, British Columbia to wrap up the two game BC road trip. Game time is 7:00 p.m. (CST)

WESMEN PLAY BETTER IN LOSS TO SIMON FRASER

The Winnipeg Wesmen played one of their better games of the season in a 70-60 loss to the Simon Fraser University Clan Friday night in Burnaby, British Columbia.

The Clan improve to 10-2, the Wesmen remain winless in the regular season with a record of 0-14.

Sean Burke led the Clan with 17 points. Chas Kok and Kevin Shawn each finished with 11. Kok had a game high nine rebounds.

James Horaska had his best output of the season finishing with 17 points. Mike James added 15 points and eight rebounds.

Winnipeg struggled in the first half trailing 19-13 after the opening quarter and 38-20 at halftime. The Wesmen were only able to connect on 26% of their shots from the field in the opening half.

Winnipeg played a solid second half, shooting a respectable 47% from the field and outscoring the Clan 40-32 in the half.

Winnipeg will take on Trinity Western Saturday night in Langley, British Columbia. Game time is 9:00 p.m. (CST)

WESMEN WIN IN FIVE, SWEEP WEEKEND SERIES

The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep over the Trinity Western University Spartans with a come from behind 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 16-25, 25-14, 15-13) victory Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The Wesmen trailed 2-1 but came back to win the fourth and fifth sets to win the match and earn a two match weekend sweep over the fifth ranked Spartans. Winnipeg beat the Spartans 3-2 in the opening match Friday night.

The Wesmen win their sixth match in a row and push their record to 8-5. The Spartans head home with a record of 8-6.

Andrew Town and Justin Duff led the Wesmen with 12 kills each. Maurice Williams added eight. Dan Lother was solid at the setter position with 40 assists and a match high 11 digs. Town, Lother and Marc Ross each had two service aces.

The Spartans were led by Steven Marshall's match high 15 kills. Rudy Verhoeff finished with 11. Marshall led the team with seven digs. Verhoeff led the Spartans with four blocks.

The first set was a see-saw affair with the Spartans leading 8-7 at the first break only to see the Wesmen rebound to take a 16-13 lead at the later break. The teams exchanged points to 23-23 when the Wesmen closed out the set taking advantage of a Spartan serving error followed by a Marc Ross kill to give the Wesmen the first set at 25-23.

Winnipeg had the advantage in the second set holding leads of 8-4 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. The Spartans took control of the set scoring six straight points to take a 20-17 lead late in set before eventually winning the set 25-20.

The Spartans in the third set had leads of 8-6 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts and continued to over power the Wesmen on their way to a decisive 25-16 win in set number three.

The Wesmen rebounded in the fourth set leading 8-7 at the first technical and expanding their lead to 16-10 at the second break. Winnipeg went on to win the set 25-14 to force a fifth and deciding set.

Winnipeg closed out the match winning the fifth set 15-13.

The Wesmen and Spartans will have a bye in the schedule next week.

SPARTANS DOWN WESMEN

The fifth ranked Trinity Western University Spartans defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-13) in the second match of a weekend series Saturday night in Winnipeg.

The victory improves the Spartans record to 9-7. The Wesmen fall to 5-8.

Kara JansenVanDoorn and Carmen Dyck led the Spartans with 10 kills. Kim Klassen added nine. Andrea Ball led the Spartans with a match high 17 digs.

Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with 13 kills and 11 digs. Sonia Rossy added eight kills. Leah Brezinski added two blocks.

Winnipeg led at both technical timeouts by scores of 8-6 and 16-15. The teams exchanged points to 24-24 until the Spartans got the final two points to take the first set 26-24.

The Spartans used their first set momentum in the second set leading 8-6 at the first technical timeout and expanded their lead to 11-7 when the Wesmen led by Alix Krahn's three straight service aces tied the score at 13-13. Trinity went on to lead 16-15 at the second timeout and eventually went on to win the set 26-24.

In the third set the Spartans gained control early on leading 8-6 at the first break before expanding their lead to 16-10 at the second break. The Spartans went on to close out the match winning the third set 25-13.

The Spartans will have the bye next weekend. The Wesmen will travel to Simon Fraser to take on the Clan for a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday.

WESMEN DOWN SPARTANS ON THE ROAD

The Winnipeg Wesmen earned a split on their West Coast road trip with a solid 81-68 victory over the Trinity Western University Spartans Saturday night in Langley, British Columbia.

The Wesmen, who were defeated by Simon Fraser in Friday nights contest improved their record to 8-7, while the Spartans fall to 2-11.

Winnipeg had five players scoring in double digits led by Jessica Strombergs 15 points. Amy Ogidan had 14. Randie Gibson finished with 13. Kaitlin RRempel tallied 12 and Mackenzie Prasek finished with 11. Stromberg and Prasek led the Wesmen in rebounds with eight.

Lauren Doubroff led the Spartans with a game high 16 points. Holly Strom added 12. Corina Reimer led the Spartans with a game high 11 rebounds.

Winnipeg grabbed the early lead in the contest at 25-20 but the Spartans came alive in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 22-12 to take a 42-37 lead into the halftime break.

The halftime break did wonders for the Wesmen as they outscored the Spartans 20-12 in the third quarter to take the lead at 57-54 after three quarters. The Wesmen kept the heat on the Spartans in the final frame to make the final score 81-68.

Winnipeg will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns for a pair of important games next Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Game time both nights is 6:00 p.m.

SPARTANS DEFEAT WESMEN

The Trinityt Western University Spartans defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 99-63 Saturday night in Langey, British Columbia.

The victory improves the Spartans record to 8-5. Winnipeg falls to 0-15.

Calvin Westbrook led the Spartans with 23 points. Jacob Doerksen added 17.

Nick Lother led Winnipeg with a game high 28 points, including six-three pointers. Ben Kingdon added 10.

The Spartans were on fire in the opening half connecting on 22-of-35 (63%) from the field which helped them to a commanding 55-37 lead at halftime.

The Spartans continued their domination in the third quarter outscoring the Wesmen 21-8 to lead 76-45 after three quarters and would go on to make the final outcome 99-63.

The Wesmen will play hosts to the Lethbridge Pronghorns next Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Game time both nights is 8:00 p.m.
