WESMEN EDGE DINOS IN REGULAR SEASON OPENER

The Wesmen opened up the 2009-2010 Canada West regular season on a positive note. The Wesmen edged the Calgary Dinos 81-79 Friday night in Calgary.

Catie Gooch led Winnipeg with a game high 26 points, including four-three pointers. Gooch also added four steals and three assists. Amy Ogidan had 18 points and Mackenzie Prasek was next with 17 points, including three-three pointers and dished out three assists.

Ashley Hall led the Dinos with 19 points. Tamara Jarrett was next with 18.

The Wesmen had a solid opening quarter leading 28-17 after the first ten minutes. The Dinos closed the gap in the second frame outscoring the Wesmen 21-17 to cut the lead to 45-38 at halftime.

After an even opening three minutes of the third quarter, Calgary dominated the remainder of the frame. Winnipeg held a ten point lead (52-42) 3:00 into the quarter when the Dinos exploded for 13 unanswered points to take the lead at 55-52 with just over two minutes to play. Calgary led after three quarters 62-58.

The Wesmen were able to regroup in the final frame outscoring Calgary 23-17 to secure the road victory.

"Calgary played tough aggressive defense, we settled down in the fourth and did a better job taking care of the ball. Caity Gooch was a factor down the stretch for us", said Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay.

The two teams will meet Saturday night in Calgary. Game time is 7:00 p.m. (Wpg Time)

WESMEN 56  Calgary 94

 DINOS OVER POWER WESMEN TO OPEN REGULAR SEASON

The Calgary Dinos defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 94-56 in the opening game of the 2009-2010 Canada West regular season Friday evening in Calgary.

Robbie Sihota led the Dinos with 19 points followed by Ross Bekkering’s 16.

The Wesmen were led by Nick Lother’s game high 24 points. Peter Lomuro was the only other Winnipeg player in double digits with 16 points.

Eric Zimmerman of the Wesmen started the game on fire scoring five straight points in the opening 1:07 to give the Wesmen a quick 5-0 lead. Both teams struggled in the middle of the frame as the game turned into a defensive tussle. Calgary went ahead 20-17 after the first quarter.

Calgary turned on the offensive power in the second quarter, outscoring the Wesmen 24-9 to open up a 44-26 advantage at halftime.

The Calgary offensive machine did not let up in the second half outscoring the Wesmen 50-30 in the final 20 minutes of play.

The Wesmen and Dinos will wrap up their regular season opening series Saturday night in Calgary. Game time is 9:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

CALGARY DOWN WESMEN, SPLIT WEEKEND SERIES

The Calgary Dinos got their revenge on this night. The Dinos earned a weekend split defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen 87-81 in the final game of the Canada West regular season opening series Saturday night in Calgary.

The Wesmen won the opening game of the series Friday night 81-79.

Ashley Hill (Calgary) led all scorers with a game high 27 points, including four three-pointers. Megan Schaufele was next with 16 points.

Caity Gooch led the Wesmen in scoring for the second consecutive night finishing with 21 points, and a trio of three-pointers. Alex MacIver was solid with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Both teams came out on fire in the opening frame draining shots from inside and outside. The Wesmen gained the early advantage leading 29-24 in a highly entertained opening quarter.

The Wesmen were cruising in the second quarter opening up a 36-30 lead until the Dinos rattled off 11 straight points (five by Ashley Hill) to take a 41-36 lead. The Dinos would go on to take the lead into the halftime break at 48-46.

Calgary maintained their lead for most of the third quarter until with 2:26 left to play in the quarter, the Wesmen scored six straight points to tie the score at 61-61. Hill drained a three with 26 seconds left but Jessica Stromberg answered right back with a long three pointer with 12 seconds left to leave both teams tied at 64-64 after three quarters.

The Wesmen opened the final frame scoring four straight points to regain the lead at 68-64 until once again the Dinos went on a run scoring ten staright points to take the lead back at 74-68 with under six minutes to play. The Wesmen did manage to tie the score at 74-74 but Calgary scored when they had the opportunities and were able to hold off the Wesmen in the final few moments.

Despite the loss, Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay was rather pleased with the effort of her team.

"It was a tough loss, but the team played hard. A split on the road is good", added McKay.

The Wesmen (1-1) will head home and start preparing for their regular season home opener next Friday and Saturday against the Alberta Pandas. Game time both nights is 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN 55  Calgary 96

CALGARY WINS EASILY OVER WESMEN

For the second consecutive night the Calgary Dinos were nothing short of dominant. The Dinos defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 96-55 Saturday night in Calgary.

Calgary dominated game one Friday night beating the Wesmen 94-56.

Tyler Fidler led the Dinos with a double-double scoring 24 points, including four-three pointers and adding 10 rebounds. Robbie Sihota was next with 21 points.

Peter Lomuro was the top scorer for Winnipeg with 16 points. Nick Lother added 14 points. Mark Ridd led Winnipeg with six rebounds,

Calgary showed their strength early and often in the opening quarter outscoring the Wesmen 30-12 in the opening frame.

The Dinos continued the onslaught in the second quarter outscoring Winnipeg 27-19 to open up a commanding 57-31 lead at halftime. Calgary outrebounded the Wesmen 24-16       in the opening half and took advantage of 11 Wesmen turnovers.

Calgary opened up the third quarter on a 12-2 run to extend their lead to 69-33. The Dinos led after three quarters 80-42 and closed out the contest outscoring the Wesmen 16-13 in the final quarter.

Notes: Calgary finished the game with a 58-33 advantage in the rebounding department, including 21-12 on the offensive boards. The Dinos had nine blocks to Winnipeg’s three.

Winnipeg (0-2) will take on the Alberta Golden Bears in their regular season home opener next Friday and Saturday. Game time both nights is 8:00 p.m.
