Alberta def WESMEN 3-1 (26-24, 17-25, 25-19, 25-22)

ALBERTA DOWN WESMEN IN FOUR

The Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (26-24, 17-25, 25-19, 25-22) Saturday night in Edmonton.

Fourth year  middle Justin Duff had a match high 18 kills for the
Wesmen, and a 52% hitting percentage. Impressive first year player Matthew Schriemer had 12 kills and Andrew Town finished with 10.

The opening set, 26-24 Alberta, was a tight affair after the Bears
clawed back from an early 3-0 Winnipeg lead. The two teams were tied
7-7, but Alberta earned their first lead courtesy of a pair of Alberta kills and
never looked back. Although they stayed in front the rest of the set,
they had a hard time closing out the Wesmen, needing extra points to do
so.

Winnipeg regrouped in the second set opening up a 10-6 lead to start the second set, and was never really tested by the Bears in the set that the Wesmen eventually won 25-17.

That momentum was tugged back in the third by the Bears, but neither side would claim it as their own until Alberta took a two-point lead courtesy a pair of Wesmen attacking errors. Alberta would go on to win the set 25-19, due to an illegal rotation by the Wesmen at set
point.

Alberta started the fourth set jumping out to an 8-5 lead, but again, couldn't hold Duff and the Wesmen off. Winnipeg tied the match at 16-16, and the two sides went back and forth
until the Bears jumped ahead for good at 22-20. The teams exchanged a pair of kills kills to make the score 24-22 when the Bears ended the match with a service ace.

The Wesmen (2-2) will head home to prepare to face the Manitoba Bisons next Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is 8:00 p.m.
