WESMEN BEAT UBC TO EXTEND WIN STREAK
The Winnipeg Wesmen extended their current winning streak to three games with an impressive 67-63 victory over the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg received a solid team contribution with four starters finishing the game in double-digits. Jessica Stromberg led the Wesmen with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Catie Gooch added 14. Amy Ogidan finished with 13, including three-three pointers and Alex MacIver had 12 points.
Alex Vieweg led UBC with 16 points. Zara Huntley added 11 and Candace Morisset had 10.
In an entertaining first quarter , Candace Morisset drained a pair of three’s in the opening frame only to be matched by Amy Ogidan and Mackenzie Prasek, who answered with three pointers of there own as three pointers were falling for both teams. Winnipeg led 16-15 after the opening frame.
Scoring in the second quarter did not come until the 3:10 mark. The Wesmen’s Jessica Stromberg opened up a three point lead at 18-15. After exchanging baskets, UBC’S Devan Lisson drained a three pointer to cut the Wesmen lead to 25-23. Winnipeg opened up their largest lead of the opening half (33-27) thanks to back-to-back three pointers by Ogidan and Catie Gooch. Winnipeg went into the halftime break with a 33-29 lead.
Jessica Stromberg opened up the third quarter scoring five straight points to extend Winnipeg’s lead to 38-31. UBC was able to respond scoring eight unanswered points to grab a 39-38 lead. The determined Wesmen squad answered back in a big way going on a 13-2 run to open up a double digit lead at 51-41. The Wesmen led 55-45 after three quarters.
The T-Birds opened up the final quarter on a 12-2 run to tie the score at 57-57 midway thru the final frame. The teams exchanged baskets to knot the score at 59-59 but the Wesmen capped an impressive night draining six free throws in the final 1:40 to pick up the win.
The victory improves Winnipeg’s record to 5-3. UBC falls to 4-3. The Wesmen will take on the Victoria Vikes Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre. UBC will take on the Manitoba Bisons at the U of M.

WESMEN 54 UBC 89
NUMBER TWO RANKED UBC BEAT WESMEN
The number two ranked team in the country, the UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 89-54 Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Josh Whyte led the T-Birds with 16 points and five assists. Blain LaBranche was next with 14. Nathan Yu finished with 10.
Peter Lomuro was the best Wesmen player on this night scoring a game high 19 points, including three-three pointers.
The game started out a close affair with UBC hanging on to a 19-15 lead after the opening quarter.
The second ranked T-Birds showed their strength in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 26-13 to open up a 45-28 lead at halftime.
The third quarter was the telling story of this game. UBC exploded for 36 points in the quarter to put the game out of reach leading 81-44 after three quarters.
Both teams went to their respective benches in the fourth quarter. Winnipeg outscored UBC 10-8 in the final quarter.
The win by the T-Birds leaves them with a record of 6-0. The Wesmen fall to 0-8. The Wesmen will look to rebound Saturday night when the host the Victoria Vikes at 8:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre. UBC will head across town to take on the Manitoba Bisons.

Women's Volleyball vs Thompson Rivers

WESMEN DEFEAT WOLFPACK IN FOUR
The Winnipeg Wesmen started the weekend off on a great note defeating the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack 3-1 (25-20, 25-16, 15-25, 25-23) Saturday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Lauren Sears and Alix Krahn led the Wesmen with 12 kills. Sonia Rossy added 11 kills and a match high 19 digs. Alix Krahn was in on nine blocks. Lauren Sears added four service aces.
Kelly Asleson led the Wolfpack with 13 kills and 18 defensive digs. Anna Dyakiewicz finished with 11. Vanessa Wiebe was in on four blocks.
Winnipeg was impressive in the opening set leading 8-7 at the first technical timeout but expanded their lead to 16-12 at the second break. Winnipeg went on to win the opening set 25-20.
In the second set Winnipeg held a slim 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout but than broke the set wide open going on a 11-1 run to take a commanding 19-8 lead. The Wesmen eventually won the second set 25-16.
Thompson Rivers found their game in the third set leading 8-4 at the first technical and took control of the set leading 16-9 at the second break. The Wolfpack went on to win the third set 25-16.
The Wesmen had things go their way in the fourth set leading at both technical timeouts (8-7 and 16-13) on their way to a 25-23 fourth set win to conclude the match.
The victory pushes Winnipeg's record to 2-6. The Wolfpack remain winless at 0-9. The two teams will conclude their weekend series Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

WESMEN BEAT WOLFPACK, SNAP LOSING STREAK
The Winnipeg Wesmen snapped a four-match losing streak defeating the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack 3-1 (27-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-18) Saturday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Andrew Town led the Wesmen attack with a match high 17 kills. Justin Duff was equally impressive with 12 kills and an attack percentage of .611. Marc Ross finished with 10 kills. Dan Lother had two service aces to go along with his 43 set assists, and 11 digs. Ross also added 11 digs. Duff led the team in blocks with four.
Gord Perrin and Kevin Tillie led the Wolfpack with 14 kills each. Tillie led the team with eight digs. Michael Hammond led the team in blocks with three.
Winnipeg after trailing for a good part of the opening set made a late charge to tie the score at 23-23. After the Wolfpack got the next point to go up 24-23, Justin Duff and Matt Schriemer's big block tied the score at 24-24. Andrew Town put away two big kills to give the Wesmen the opening set 27-25.
In the second set, Winnipeg came out in impressive fashion leading 8-6 and 16-12 on their way to taking control of the match winning the second set 25-19. The Wesmen had an attack percentage of .455 in the set.
The Wolfpack got themselves back in the match in the third set leading 8-7 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts before going on to win the third set 25-21 and trail 2-1 (in sets) in the match.
The Wesmen attack was on full throttle in the fourth set. Winnipeg was on fire with an attack percentage of .500 on their way to a 25-18 fourth set win to close out the match.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 3-5. Thompson Rivers falls to 4-5. The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.

WESMEN 50 Victoria 60
WESMEN FALL TO VICTORIA
The Winnipeg Wesmen were not able to make it a perfect weekend. The Victoria Vikes defeated the Wesmen 60-50 in a tight defensive game Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Kayla Dykstra led the Vikes with a game high 21 points and 12 rebounds. Debbie Yeboah added 17.
Amy Ogidan and Alex MacIver led the Wesmen with 12 points and eight rebounds each. Catie Gooch added 11 points.
The teams came out on fire in a very entertaining opening quarter which saw the two teams battle to a 17-17 score after ten minutes.
The Vikes gained momentum early in the second quarter ruuning off eight straight points to take a 25-17 lead. Back to back baskets by Catie Gooch got the Wesmen back in the game trailing 25-22 with over five minutes to play. Victoria once again extended their lead late in the quarter to 31-24 when the Wesmen responded with seven unanswered points to tie the score
at 31-31 after twenty minutes.
Victoria reeled off seven points at the start of the third to open up a 38-31 lead. The Vikes went on to outscore the Wesmen 13-6 in the quarter to lead 44-37 after three quarters and continued to hold the lead for the remainder of the game.
The victory leaves the Vikes with a record of 4-3 heading into the break. Winnipeg falls to 5-4. The Wesmen will next see action at the end of December at the University of Calgary Invitational. Victoria will host Brandon in the new year in January.

WESMEN 47 Victoria 72
VIKES DEFEAT WESMEN
The visiting Victoria Vikes defeated the hometown Winnipeg Wesmen 72-47 Saturday night in front of 1500 fans at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Jeff Cullen led the Vikes with a game high 17 points. Ryan MacKinnon added 13, including a pair of three pointers. Mike Berg was the leading rebounder with a game high nine rebounds.
Eric Zimmerman was the lone Wesmen figuring in double digits with 10 points. Brayden Duff, celebrating his 18th birthday added nine points and eight rebounds.
The Vikes took control of the game early on by going on a 17-4 run in the final half of the first quarter to open up a 28-12 lead after the opening ten minutes.
The Vikes outscored Winnipeg 15-8 in the second frame to take a commanding 4-20 lead into the halftime break.
The teams went to their respective benches for playing time for a majority of the second half.
The Victoria win pushes their record to 4-3. Winnipeg remains winless on the regular season with a record of 0-9. The Wesmen will now prepare for the 43rd Annual Wesmen Classic at the end of December. Victoria will now head into the break and will see action in the new year against Brandon.

WESMEN COMPLETE SWEEP OVER WOLFPACK
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a two match weekend sweep against the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-21, 17-25, 25-21) victory Sunday afternnon at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg was led by the trio of Ariel Smith, Lauren Sears and Carleen Kruschel who all finished with 13 kills. Winnipeg had a strong serving match finishing with 11 service aces with Ariel Smith leading the way with three. Sonia Rossy led the Wesmen with 19 digs. Lauren Sears finished with three blocks.
Anna Dyakiewicz led Thompson Rivers with a match high 15 kills. Marilla Vasconcellos added 20 digs. Kelly Asleson was in on three blocks.
The hometown Wesmen got off to a great start in the first set opening up a 8-2 lead at the first technical and holding their ground to lead 16-10 at the second break. Winnipeg went on to win the opening set 25-15. The Wesmen had an attack percentage of .412 in the opening set.
Set number two was closer than the first. Winnipeg held a slim lead 8-7 at the first technical break but the Wolfpack responded to take the lead at 16-15 at the second break. The Wesmen regrouped outscoring Thompson Rivers 10-5 down the stretch to win the second set 25-21.
The Wolfpack found their game in the third set leading at both technical timeouts 8-7 and 16-12. Thompson Rivers got themselves back in the match winning the third set 25-17.
Thompson Rivers carried the momentum for a good portion of the fourth set leading 8-5 and 16-14 at the set breaks. Winnipeg found their legs late in the set and back-to-back kills by Alix Krahn led the Wesmen to a 25-21 set win to conclude the match.
The victory improves the Wesmen's record to 3-6. Thompson Rivers remains winless at 0-10. Both teams will head into the holiday break and will next see regular season action in the new year.

WESMEN SWEEP WOLFPACKThe Winnipeg Wesmen completed a successful weekend with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-23) sweep over the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Justin Duff led the Wesmen with a match high 16 kills and three blocks. Andrew Town was next with 11 kills and two blocks. Matt Schriemer had 10 kills with an attack percentage of .571. Matt Stubler led the team with seven digs.
Kevin Tillie led the Wolfpack with 13 kills, two service aces and two blocks. Gord Perrin added nine kills, four digs and two blocks.
Winnipeg gained the advantage early in the first set leading 8-6 at the first technical only to see the Wolfpack storm back to take a 16-15 lead at break number two. The Wesmen responded with a bang running off 10 of the next 13 points to take the first set 25-19. The Wesmen finished the opening set with an attack percentage of .579.
Set number two went the Winnipeg way once again. Winnipeg led 8-4 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg scored four straight points to open up a 20-12 lead and eventually went on to win the second set 25-21.
The desperate Wolfpack squad came out in set number three on fire leading 8-3 at the first technical timeout. The Wesmen attack came thru once again led by Justin Duff’s five kills to take the lead at the second timeout 16-14. Winnipeg fought off a late charge by the Wolfpack and went on to win the final set 25-23.
Winnipeg heads into the holiday break with a 4-5 record. Thompson Rivers falls to 4-6. Both teams will resume their respective Canada West regular season schedules in January.
